even shop lights though I suspect that might be a little too bright.

They work ok if you bounce them off enough walls/ceilings. My paintbrushes pic in this contest was taken in an unfinished bathroom with a big ass halogen pointed up at a wall, and the small flash on my camera.

That can certainly take some doing :/
