On the Nikon side of the house, the D40 and D60 will only work with AF-S lenses (in auto focus, you can still manual focus the AF, G or D lenses fine). If you come across an old(er) AF, G or D lens on the cheap, it will auto focus with a D50 (out of production, can be found cheap in some online sources) or with a D90 ($$$).

Let me tell you this: even with the fastest glass you’re going to want 800 speed film for a concert. I’ve shot a bunch of concerts, and I’ve only shot one with film. Film is awesome in many ways, but DSLRs are way better for concerts quality wise.

Not to mention that concerts call for 100s of exposures.

I’m well aware that it’s not the camera, so far most of my best shots have been with a 3.2 power shot and a cheapo advantex. I was simply stating that the camera’s interface and processor speeds are horrendous.

I had a Powershot A70 that was just a fantastic little camera. Only 3.2mp but the photos were still pretty darned good quality for all that.

I have that, It’s my take everywhere camera. It’s fantastic.
