KeymasterIt’s that time of year again: Give us your best Hallowe’en photos.

ParticipantI’m going to be completely honest here, which will most likely prove unpopular (honestly, esp. mine, never is), but I’m really not feeling this theme at this time. I know it’s been 5 years since H3. But the voting will be post-Halloween, when everyone’s seen every FB Halloween meme at least a dozen times over. I think the voting public will be over it before it’s happened. I’d rather do something else.
There, I typed it. Anyone else feeling this way, and willing to type it so?

ParticipantIm fine going either way but we’ve done the halloween contest starting on halloween night before and just off the top of my head I don’t remember the voting being horribly low then.

KeymasterIt’s proven a popular contest in years past, and as ravnostic mentioned, it’s been 5 years since we’ve done this theme. If there’s a significant number of people wanting to schedule something else, I guess we can discuss it, but this has been scheduled since mid-September. I’m not sure about changing it with 10 days or less until the contest; seems rushed when it could have been discussed over a month ago if this were a problematic theme.

ParticipantDam it, I spent two hours yesterday shooting the Zombie Walk. I have enough Zombie T&A to start a website….

ParticipantYeah, I kinda figured I’d be in the minority. My opinion most often is (those emails I get stating otherwise are lies). I’ll have pics, anyways.
Sad; Halloween used to be my favorite holiday.
//carry on then.

KeymasterSo…I’m confused. People have emailed you saying they didn’t want to do this theme?
/been a long day on a short night

ParticipantGiven my dearth of “Halloween” pics, are graveyard shots acceptable? Are graveyard shots acceptable if I can fake a ghost? Let’s say I get the urge, are pumpkins and gourds OK?
I have no kids and my social life doesn’t include any dress-up/costume events. Also, this year, I’m teaching that evening, and probably will be until close to 9.
I would be the rare person to be on ravnostic‘s side. However, it IS a bit too late to change anything. If I gotta skip that week, I’ll survive.

ParticipantI’d say all of those are fine and yours likely won’t be the only ones, Yugoboy. It’s not my theme, but these things are usually more “anything that implies the mood” rather than strict literal interpretations.
I’m pretty much in the same boat, except that I have kids but they’re long past the Halloween dressup stage. I could probably go either way (it won’t be my finest performance, I’m sure), but I wouldn’t mind seeing everyone else’s entries and I agree with you and Els that it’s too late at this point anyway.

Those would be fine, as long as its halloweenish.

ParticipantThanx… I’ve got a couple weeks still, so I’ve got a chance to find something

ParticipantI actually thought since Halloween was actually on Wednesday that this was the perfect theme for it. I thought Close Encounters of the Third Kind would have also been appropriate. And I’m planning on using graveyard shots too.

I have to admit that I don’t really enjoy Halloween either. I guess being an adult with no kids takes most of the fun out of it.

It would be more fun in my neighborhood if it were our neighborhood kids who came to the door. Unfortunately, greater than 50% of the kids are brought to our neighborhood in van loads because it’s both safer, and more generous than their own neighborhoods. Even that would be OK if it weren’t for the fact that a huge percent of those are either kids who don’t dress up at all or adults with 0-2 year olds in strollers also begging for candy.
If it were still kids 4-16 all dressed up in costumes, then I’d feel a little different. (I’ve actually asked “What are you supposed to be?” to costume-less kids, and when they answer “nothing” my response is “Well, that’s what you get” and then close the door on their shocked faces…). Even the one year I went out as a freshman in college I dressed up. Based on my usual clothes, doing Alice Cooper ain’t hard, but at least I made the effort.
Wow… that got long…

ParticipantC’mon guys, you get to give stuff to strangers just because it’s enjoyable. And people accept that stuff without care for reciprocity or passing it on. Screw Christmas with its pressure and obligation and stress. Nobody is spending all night worrying if they spent the right amount on this coworker or that relative on Halloween. Can’t afford to give out candy? Leave your lights off and no one gives you a second thought. Want to spend 10x as much as the next guy and you’re just the awesome guy who handed out full size candy bars.
Christmas/Eid/Chanukah is brutal for the poor. Thanksgiving is brutal for people with crappy families. Valentines day is brutal for people who just broke up. MLK day is brutal for the KKK. Holi is brutal for neat freaks. Independence Day is brutal for pets scared of loud noises.
Halloween is the only holiday that is for *everybody.*Except catastrophically poor adults who don’t have kids, or friends to party with, and who don’t appreciate the decorations or slutty costumes. But screw those assholes.
