ParticipantHey all, long time no see.
I’ve been so busy this last half-year that I’ve barely had time for anything but schoolwork and research. Things seem to be calming down after the insanity of my first year of grad school, though, so it looks like I’ll be able to participate here at least every once in a while. That is, at least when my advisor(s) are out of town and my teachers aren’t giving me things to do every day.
So, what’d I miss?

ParticipantEverything, plama. Say, I’m looking to travel after Christmas, and Hawaii is on the menu; what’s your schedule like Dec 30-Jan 8?

ParticipantNot quite sure yet, but it’s a good bet I’ll be on the mainland to visit my family between Dec 20ish and sometime in the first week of January. I’ll warn you, though-that’s probably the worst time to come out here (January, that is). It’s our two weeks of winter, which are rainy and windy in the extreme.

ParticipantWelcome back! We have some new people and larger image sizes.

ParticipantHey, plama, welcome back; I was wondering when we’d see you again. You surely picked an appropriate contest for your return!
As Kes mentioned, file sizes have changed. On the BiblioStats side, I implemented the Normalized Place calcuation that you (and I think rav) wanted.
How’s everything in Hawaii (other than busy)?

ParticipantJust noticed this: Dang, son, you’ve been gone so long, you’re on the Kotters list this week!

ParticipantNikon dropped by and gave us all D800’s. Sucks you missed out but welcome back!

ParticipantMeh, you can have mine. It was only good as a tripod weight and didn’t perform very well for that either… 😛

Sure…You have my mailing address or should I PM you? 😆

ParticipantHey now, I was offering it to plama. You’ve already got one – remember?!? 😆

A) Hooray for larger filesizes!
B) Double hooray for normalized place calculation!
C) Things in Hawaii are…well, Hawaii. Research is going well too. I’m working on the detectability of plate tectonics on exoplanets now. Cool stuff. Also, yeah, I’ll take anybody’s spare D800 if they don’t need it anymore. 🙂
Oh, also also, in the interim I got myself an F100 and I’m shooting Velvia now as well as digital. Fun times!

ParticipantHoly crap that sounds amazing. Is that something we can really see? I mean I thought we were really only seeing exoplanets from the “wobble” on their stars anyway – so are we able to hone in on that and get more detailed planetary data to be able to guess at their compositions?
September 14, 2012 at 2:11 am #49005Plamadude30k
ParticipantWell, that’s what I’m working on-can we see it? The answer is complex; we probably can’t see it directly, but there are other related things we might be able to see in the near future.

Participant^also think that’s very cool… you’re gonna have to school us at some point on that.
