When I lose an f-stop (because I am using a teleconverter, for instance), what does that mean, exactly?

It means that you will get one stop less actual light than your lens aperture indicates. i.e. your lens set at f/4 will actually pass the equivalent light as if it were set at f/5.6.

Ok, so I’m not so much losing a stop as I am shifting everything.
