Just stumbled across a device that looks like it could be quite handy. It’s a mechanism for securely clipping your camera to yourself without a neckstrap. Looks like it would be perfect for hiking or cycling.

HD video of it here: http://vimeo.com/23068544

I think it’s a promising idea, but I’m curious about how it would feel to have that weight attached at one point. I think it might be cumbersome, but the inventor claims to have used it for hiking and biking. I guess it can’t be any worse than having it swinging around on a neckstrap.

Wow, $50k in backers with an initial goal of only $10k. Seems like it wouldn’t be cumbersome if you’re wearing a tight-enough belt or backpack, but if you just have it strapped to a loose backpack then I can see it swinging around pretty easily (like a normal neckstrap, though). I like this idea.

It sounds a lot like this, which actually exists already: http://www.spiderholster.com/single-camera-system.html

I think the idea is this one would be more versatile – instead of being a bulky holster that attaches to a special belt, it’s a small clip that you could fasten to anything. Between the two, if they performed the same, I’d much prefer the newer one.

This looks kinda awesome. Definitely something I could use.

Yea Umm..I could see me with the D7000, battery grip, and 70-200 f2.8 attaching that to my belt and ending up with my pants around my ankles!!
Seriously though I can see that being useful with a lightweight camera setup. I think with a heavy rig it may be uncomfortable at best.

Seems to me that this clip system would dovetail perfectly with a “Sam Browne”-style belt-and-strap.

Suspenders. Suspenders are the answer here.

Anyone know where I can find a pair of suspenders these days?

Sure, F’tographer, in the Sears and Roebuck catalog. It’s in the outhouse out back, unless Uncle Jessie’s been visiting, in which case the book’s down to ‘Travel Agencies’ and thereafter by now.

I had some AWESOME suspenders when I was a little tyke. I’m talking rainbow ones – my brother and I had a matching set we would have to wear to church. I need to dig up that photo and embarrass the hell out of him now.

I’d say it’d embarrass me too, but…well…I have no shame 🙄

Just $10 and they’re all yours.

We actually carry suspenders at JCPenney 🙂

Totally off topic; I love JCP. All my shirts are med-tall, and Az Jean Co is the only place I can get 32W 36L jeans (I’m just a gangly geek, after all.)

    i really like(d) that.

the (d) is because i went back and checked the price. ouch. i’ll stick with my neck strap worn diagonally instead. doesn’t bounce or swing too much and positions at the eye quickly.

I probably should have linked to their smaller version, which isn’t quite as big or pricy: http://www.spiderholster.com/black-widow-holster.html I’d definitely need to try it in real life before I considered putting the $$ down for one though….
