based on chupaand sleeping alone; I guess I’d like to got toward the I/R removal, keeping the rest intact. I LIKE the effect in the image sleeping posted. A desert environment like mine might make use of that…

The main purposing of the camera, though, would be astro related. Anything I got more terrestrial than that, I’d just consider a bonus.

I should be getting my IR-converted NEX-3 back tomorrow 🙂 I had it done for terrestrial photography though. In the end I decided to go with a 720nm filter on the sensor instead of full spectrum because I didn’t want to have to deal with the additional filters to do true IR.

I left mine wide open. side effect of doing the surgery myself. With Lumicon’s Ha filter I can shoot with the viewfinder and in aperture priority (-3 to -5 EV based on direct sunlight). With a cheap chinese 720nm filter, I can’t see shit and have to hop AF works or stop down and guestimate. Sleeping won’t have that issue as his filter is between the lens and sensor. So, the tradeoffs are a) do you want bandpass flexibility? or b) do you want ease of composition when shooting outside visible?

Personally, for AP, I’d go with no internals and use bandpass filters with your scope. Eventually, I plan on shooting RGB lights separately through Ha, OIII, and SII, respectively then combining in channel mixer.

    sleeping can’t wait to see!

orionid; I read the interwebz manual on the surgery and wouldn’t dare. Kudos–I bow to your geekdom techie prowess.

I want to capture the added wavelengths to my astrophotos. But I’d consider the ability to get stuff like you do a bonus. I’d happily buy some filters to achieve this–esp. as I did okay at the casino today so this has become something of a freebie project. 😉

I am SOOOO tempted to do the removal on my old 300D. The only things keeping me from it are A) max usable ISO of 800 and B) no live view makes focusing a monumental chore (I’ve spent almost an hour just achieving focus before).

I’ve been thinking about having my 20D converted to IR. hmm.

For a reasonably affordable semi-long fast prime, take a look at a used 200mm f/2.8L. I bought one this past fall from Japan for around $600. Good god, that thing is a joy to use.

Canon sold a version of the 20D sans IR block labeled as a 20DA specifically to cater to astrophotographers. A lot of folks are using the 20D/20DA.

My last run of astrophotos was shot with a 70-200mm F2.8L. I’m impresed with the color correction, I can only imagine it being better with a prime lens. I’ve got Canon’s 2X extender that I did some playing with over vacation; can’t wait to try it out on my next astro-trip. It will reduce my lens to F5.6, but I shot my last batch of pics at ISO1600. I may see what I can manage with ISO6400… if the noise isn’t too objectionable it will make shooting at F5.6 bearable.

Whoo-hoo! Cost to repair the xTi and remove the IR filter only $200! I told ’em to giterdun! Unfortunately, it’s going to take a few weeks as the parts aren’t in stock to repair the mirror/sensor. :o(. I’m going with the option to just remove the filter, and leave the ability to see ‘color’ as well as IR, intact.
