ParticipantOkay, just to be safe, I’ll ask.

I’m okay with letting this one go, but I need to know while there’s still time to shoot a replacement.November 20, 2011 at 5:12 pm #42036U-Man
ParticipantI aimed and shot and missed.
I thought that “Take three different photos of different parts of the same subject and combine them in a vertical or horizontal triptych” was clear.
It isn’t.
The theme (in my head) is too tight for us, the regular farktoraphers. It’s gonna be way too tight for the masses. I like ennuipoet’s and orionid’s triptychs. But they don’t fit the theme as it stands right now. I think we need to change the wording to open it up. As (a slightly miffed) kestrana suggested:
Take three different photos of the same subject and combine them as a triptych for a single fark-sized entry. As usual, you can submit three entries. Difficulty – The subject must be alive.
Note – this wording is not what I initially intended. I wanted to force us out of the comfort zone to do something new. The new loose wording will allow comfortable archive-diving and rearranging. I wanted triptychs that made a whole from three parts. Or a whole from two parts and a wider angle view of the whole subject. I haven’t shot them yet, but I intend to at least try getting triptychs of my three daughters. They will include:
Eldest – Eyes/face – hand drawing a dragon or cat – comfortable shoes
Middle – Eyes/face – hands on a piano keyboard – fancy shoes
Youngest – Eyes/face – hands folding something (stuffed animal? Ice cream?) – bare feet.Or, I’ve got a selfy in mind that shows me: eyes, spiky hair, Canon, husband, father…
So. Anyway. I think we need to make it open and let the voters decide. Too much wrangling over details isn’t at all fun. And it really, really should be fun. Many of us will grow a little with this theme. And that’s a big part of farktography, too.

ParticipantWe’ll let U-Man call it, but to me, that doesn’t fit the ‘parts’ of a subject description. I was thinking it meant not seeing the entire subject in a panel, just a portion.

ParticipantI like the “parts” part, it’s what I shot (am shooting) for, either way ya’ll go with it.

This was my interpretation, as well, and impacted my shooting. The two sets of people I’ve got were shot specifically for this theme. The tree I shot was an archive dive to replace the tree I shot that just didn’t work. The tree triptych also fits your theme.
To avoid too much angst and to avoid too much moderators having to moderate, I agree that a more liberal interpretation will be necessary.
Where I was/am looking for leniency (in my case) is the design. Do they have to be stacked or side-by-side, or can I add some creativity to it? The photoshopper wants to have some fun with the design.
Like last week’s government buildings, the last minute stress probably will be a tempest in a teacup and the voters will have the final say.

ParticipantHow about a “parts are encouraged but not required” clause?
November 20, 2011 at 5:25 pm #42041Elsinore
KeymasterThe wording as it stands was clear to me–parts of whole of the same living subject. The subsequent discussion muddled things for me. Also, people can certainly still archive dive if it’s three different parts–people can crop as desired to isolate different subject parts.
But whatevs. I haven’t shot for this yet and not sure what to do with it because time keeps on slippin’ slippin’ slippin’ into the future….

ParticipantSomehow I missed the idea of different parts making the whole and ended up with a same subject different poses/positions. Therefore, the two attached, definitely would not fit the theme as it should be, correct?

I can reshoot and come up with at least one..possibly still working on my “evil” theme, but what about the possibility of allowing them for this contest & then making a tighter more restrictive one a little later? Yes that probably sucks for the ones who have shot and got it right, but they could still use them for this one and maybe shoot new for the next? Or are we totally trying to stay away from similar themes, at least fairly close to each other? Just an idea.
Either way, I’m okay with whatever is decided. I have off on Tuesday so I can spend all day shooting if need be 😛 Maybe my writing group will allow me to take a couple shots! heh

The wording was very clear to me, too – U-man even posted examples of what he had in mind in the first place. Perhaps those should be re-posted. I don’t think we should be loosening up the rules on this one – I still don’t have all of my shots, and it’s definitely not too late for other people to get appropriate ones.
If anything, I feel loosening the rules of this theme makes it suffer. This is one of those themes that pushes you outside your element and forces you to think outside the box – if we break it down to the lowest common denominator so people can archive-dive and do easy shoots, it’s going to hurt everyones’ advancement as photographers. I’d rather have it set the way U-man originally envisioned it, even if it means lower participation for the sacrifice of higher quality.
Just my (for some reason rather strong for this theme) opinion…. I see this being a potentially epic theme, and don’t want it simplified for simplicity’s sake.

The way I’m interpreting it, the first one is *close* (the left and right images are very similar as far as “parts” go, so if you used another part of your hand to make the final symbol, maybe that’d fly?) but the second doesn’t fit.
U-man’s call, though.

ParticipantAlso: I realized that I misread the original theme way back when and had that in mind when I arranged mine. No biggie, I’ve got one that definitely fits, and can shoot more. Maybe. I just have to find willing family/pets/plants.

hah if I use the other hand for the last image, would that count? 😛

Participantok – are mine still kosher? I’m getting confused with all the words.
😯
November 20, 2011 at 9:51 pm #42048linguine
ParticipantDo we need to have all three images stacked vertically or horizontally, or can we arrange them in different ways. The theme says vertical or horizontal but in the examples there was at least one where it was 2 stacked vertically on the left and one image on the right side.

ParticipantYou guys… *shakes head*
Perhaps I should stop worrying about stepping on toes with this one and just stick with the initial wording – with one minor change to get rid of the layout clause.
Take three different photos of different parts of the same subject and combine them as a triptych for a single fark-sized entry. As usual, you can submit three entries. Difficulty – The subject must be alive.
It sounds like y’all just want me to make a farking decision. Right? So let’s let it stand as above, recognizing that a full-view plus two parts is OK.
gambitsgirl – yes. Your three are OK.
Any layout is OK as long as it has three panels. A single background photo with two inset panels is OK. -
