KeymasterStars, Planets, other celestial bodies, spacecraft, or observational equipment. Difficulty: No streetlights. Note: Stacking and other astrophotography techniques are allowed for astrophotos; HDR and other software enhancements are not – all other normal Farktography rules apply.
This theme was written in the stars by orionid.

ParticipantYay! Far enough into the future that I’ll have a chance to get some new images! Winter this year has been a be-ach.

KeymasterYeah, we’ve pushed it back so much at this point, that I wanted to schedule it, but obviously with enough advance notice for people to work out what they want to do and how they want to do it.

ParticipantComet Pan-STARRS will be popular, no doubt, and Lemmon for those in the southern hemisphere. There’s some thin crescent moons between now and then, and plenty of time to hunt out Iridium flares. Lots of opportunities for those without telescopes to bring on a good show.

ParticipantThere’s something I’d like to be addressed in this theme, and that’s stitching. The most recognized example is this one: http://hubblesite.org/gallery/album/pr1995044a/.
Not saying I’m going to go there (I’m just thinking ahead to the possibility), with many astro-images, a stitched FOV can be necessary. Can this be added to the theme description? There are other examples I can think if you’d like citations…

I wrestled with this the first time around and figured I wouldn’t address it until someone asked. Short answer: I have no problem with stitching for this purpose. But. What I don’t want is “ooh, look at my stitched panorama of such and such city skyline. It’s got stars, it counts, right?” Like if you did your superstition mountains again as a stitched panorama, it’d be out no matter how gorgeous the startfield.
I’ll take suggestions to the wording, but I guess adding something to the effect of “Stitching for the purpose of telescopic FoV only” in between “stacking” and “and other…”

ParticipantDifficulty: No terrestrial elements? That would keep things totally in the sky, rather than getting stuff like pretty mountains with star trails (but that might also keep a lot of people from participating). Or maybe ‘stitching permitted for celestial bound shots only’. In my case, I have a hard time with bigger objects (Andromeda, Orion’s Neb) without using at least 2 POVs to get the diameters. (This may no longer be true, I’m working on piggybacking a 1000mm to my 2800mm, and I’ll see how it goes…)

ParticipantI’d hate to see all terrestrial elements banned. Sometimes a small foreground silhouette lends a lot of interest to astronomy shots. Maybe specify a percentage that has to be starfield? Just my opinion…

I don’t want to prevent terrestrial shots, they’re specifically included for people without good sky access. And honestly, I’m considering star trails over the Golden Gate Bridge myself. I just don’t want the can of worms to open on a free-for all panoramic thread once people hear “stitching” is okay.
Actually, you know what? As it’s written: “Note: Stacking and other astrophotography techniques are allowed for astrophotos.” Y’all are smart. Y’all know what you’re doing. That’s an astrophoto technique, so it’s kosher. We just won’t use that ‘S’ word. If anyone else comes in with the same question, I’ll just refer them back to “astrophotography techniques.”

O-righty-then; that seems reasonable enough.

Pretty big assumption in my case. I just make shiat up as I go.

Also also wik, I just realized that I probably should have scheduled our anniversary theme for this week instead of the astrophotography theme. The actual anniversary is May 11, and depending on how the dates fall, it’s been scheduled as early as May 8 or as late as May 14. Would you guys rather push Farkstronomy back a week to May 15 or schedule the Anniversary theme for May 15 instead?

ParticipantAs I am always short on time, put me down for pushing Farkstronomy out a week.
March 27, 2013 at 7:44 pm #50793orionid
ParticipantI’m good with the push….. I’m at a loss either way. That’ll at least put me on the opposite end of the outage so I might have a week or two to snag some star trails.

ParticipantUnless it gets pushed to July, I’m unlikely to get anything more than I have now. So… whatever.
