ParticipantHmmm. I actually do shoot for the contests, and I think that’s half the fun/challenge for me.
On another note, Southwest Airlines sucks! They screwed up my husband’s connecting flight so he is stuck in Seattle for the night. Grrr. 😈

ParticipantAnd for anyone that doesn’t know, Screaming in Digital is the one who started Farktography, so I’m more than happy to give any new ideas he might come up with a chance. 🙂

Participantre time: a consistent time would be nice. personally i’d like to see it be 8 for TF and maybe 2 hours later for fark lite. or maybe 7 eastern for TF and 9 for regular. in any case a small head start for the TF folk.
I’ve been back and forth with Drew on this – the most consistent we’ve been is “close to midnight” EST. I was totally shocked at the immediate greenlight tonight; I’ll ask him if this is to be the standard for the future though. (but I’d like an hour or even just a half hour buffer for the TF’rs)
Re: other contests – between work, homework, and family time my free time level has decreased dramatically. For me personally it’s just not in the cards at the moment 😥

That sound cool. Count me in.
Now, the one week I have to go to work early, the contest gets greened right away. I usually post my entries, leave for work and check a few hours later when I get home. If they keep going green this early, I’m not sure I will stay a TotalFarker. I guess you cant please everybody.

ParticipantI agree with Curious‘s comment about how a new contest site could suffer from being too complicated and have too many rules.
I do know that the popularity of Farktography is due to that anyone can enter. I’ve seen people with really amazing photos enter knowing that they won’t get many votes because they have entered late. While it’s great to see them do so, I also think it’s a shame they don’t get the attention that early posters get.
I’ve been kicking around the idea of a new contest site that would remain fun without being overly complicated or technical, or worth1000 like, but also offer some rewards. Some of you may have noticed that the rules for Farktography are quite similar to worth1000’s photography rules. I did borrow alot of the rules from there and modified them somewhat.
I’ll kick the idea of a new contest site around. It’ll be a big project so I’d really have to be pretty sure about it to invest all the time I’d need to put into it. If anyone cares to add any thoughts to this, feel free to email me at digitalpix at gmail.

The FSM project has provided me with some ideas for a contest site, and I probably have the technical chops to do some of the heavy lifting. Time management will be an issue.

ParticipantDescription: The interplay of light and dark
This one was a success. Early returns show that we have 118 farktographers with 204 entries (receiving votes). You’d have to go back to Black and White to exceed the farktographer count, and Light to exceed the entry count. That’s pretty cool.
And, we picked up 45 boobies.
(the FSM charts will be updated at 9:45:13 PM CST tonight, I’m using a dev instance to get this data)

ParticipantI am interested in Screaming In Digital‘s idea of the new contest site. what is this worth1000 that people are comparing it to? i especially like the idea of no one seeing entries until it goes live – that would definitely even the playing field as far as vote timing goes.
as far as multiple contests via fark, i probably wouldn’t have time to do two separate themes every week, what with wedding prep, moving, audit at work, etc. if there’s interest though i say go for it.

Worth1000.com is mostly known for their Photoshop contests. Absolutely amazing stuff. It far surpasses what you’ll see in Fark Photoshops.
Worth1000 also has photography contests as well, altho I’ve never really followed them.
Photoshopcontest.com is another amazing Photoshop contest site if anyone is interested.

ParticipantJust thought I’d add a link to a recent worth1000.com photoshop contest. Their “Out Of Bounds” theme is always amazing.

Sorry to say ShutterGeek’s photo had to be disqualified as it was submitted previously under their former FARK username.(On a side note, is there anything the http://www.schneeworld.com/fsm/ can’t do?

That’s a pretty nice comment to wake up to. Thanks. I’ve got all sorts of plans for new features. Finding the time…well…

There’s the proper accounting of “on-behalf-of” entries (assuming that OBO’ing isn’t soon against the rules)
I want to rework “greatest farktograher evar|recent” to handle total votes, finishing place (1st, 2nd, …), total entries, average votes per, and that sort of thing. Maybe I’ll use that polarizer equation I posted. Or just hard code idle_hands as the greatest and be done with it.
I can probably automate (and continuously update) a finishing place per contest report (think a contest page that shows the entries and those entries’ ranks (1st, 2nd, … 18th)). Auto-account for DQs and augment the farktographer portfolio to show this info.
And I want to expose an easier way to get to the porfolios. Sure, searching is easy enough, but using a URL such as “http://…/fsm/portfolio/html/logomancer” would be easier, and bookmarkable.
Probably need to cull the useless and/or redundant reports.
And then there’s all sorts of internal engineering improvements.
Or, I could just go make photographs.
