ParticipantA friend of mine has asked my help getting a Portfolio website setup for his graphic design and possibly photography as well. Our first thought was to use a self-hosted WordPress installation as I have a hosting account and plenty of space and such to host it for him. But thought I’d ask around to see if anyone else had any recommendations on a customizable / skinable software package that I could either get cheap / free or is available through GoDaddy’s hosting.

ParticipantWordpress seems to be the easiest/less expensive solution. Great way to start. My sites are also WordPress-based (I flirted with Joomla a while back too, was a bit harder to manage).
Still, should you have a bigger budget, you can also take a look at smugmug and the like. WordPress is cool and all but getting it integrated with large galleries is not that smooth, you can easily end up with a lot of duplicated content, which is why I may be looking for a centralized solution in the not so distant future.

ParticipantIf you’re serious, have a chat with Don Giannatti over at SteelID.
Tell him John G. sent you. 😉

ParticipantYeah, I’ve got a home-based host and just throw up another WordPress install when I need another site. emiliogtz I didn’t like Joomla all that much either – I need to transfer one last site from there.
And I agree – from the gallery side it can get a little tricky, especially if you want a shopping cart and the like. I use Smugmug for my gallery/shopping.

ParticipantThanks for all the hints and information. Talking with my friend it sounds like he wants to use the site mostly as a portfolio site for his graphic design work, possibly to help him in getting a new/better job in the near future. Doubt the galleries will get all that big at the time being, just need something easily customizable to get the look and feel he wants.
