Hello, Farktographers… I was once a lurker/occasional “end of the thread” poster… I really got into photography this year and I find the Fark contests amazingly helpful and educational. This last few weeks I’ve started to actually pull together shots and work for the contests, it’s been great.

Good to see you over here 🙂 Your shot of the Thai prayer dancers this week is absolutely gorgeous, and well deserving of its votes (and then some!). Browsed your galleries briefly, and there’s lots of eye candy there. What are you shooting?
September 7, 2007 at 1:13 am #13478FlavivirusParticipantThank you, Elsinore! I have long admired your work (and, seeing the FSM just recently, apparently everyone else does too!). I’m using a D50 right now with a 18-200 all-purpose… my two major purchases this year will be the D300 and the well-reviewed Sigma 10-20. I’m a fan of natural lighting so I’ve yet to go down the whole “oodles of lamps and reflectors” pathway… This is not a cheap hobby… 😛
I was excited, this week was my first top-ten finish (and i placed with two photos!), so only place to go is down from here, haha. I am trying to find ways to motivate and push my learning, and I have found Farktography to be perfect for it. I really appreciate the work that the moderators and this community put into it, and learning from you guys/gals is a very humbling and productive process.
September 7, 2007 at 1:26 am #13479ElsinoreKeymasterThanks, much yourself 😉 As for votes/stats, it ebbs and flows. Mine are going to be sinking over the next few weeks because I had a good run a couple months back, but have petered off here recently (and staplermofo’s entries from this week are currently helping me out this week as they haven’t been transferred yet ). The votes kinda work out well in the long run–there usually isn’t one person who dominates all the time, because none of us can possibly be the best at every different type of photography or every type of subject matter. And there are weeks/themes that inspire some more than others. So it works out pretty well.
Enjoy your two top-tens this week–I’m sure they won’t be your last! You have an excellent eye. The D50 is a great camera (and of course the D300 looks sa-weet), but of course your eye is more important regardless of what you’re shooting. And no, this isn’t a cheap hobby 😆 I just got the Tokina 12-24 f/4 myself in July and it’s nice to have wiiiiiiiide angle coverage. I think Xenpics got the Sigma 10-20 and mentioned it somewhere here. I like natural light too, but don’t underestimate what you can do with a couple livingroom lamps and some white posterboard 😉
September 7, 2007 at 1:43 am #13480CuriousParticipantwelcome Flavivirus. nice galleries, you’ve got a good eye.
Elsinore has several good points re voting and equipment. and we all will get a chance to see how innovative we can be in a couple of weeks when it comes to off camera lighting. the theme is open enough that you won’t have to break the bank to make your pictures. and keep in mind that different light sources produce different color effects. that can be used to your advantage if you play with both the light source and your camera settings.
September 7, 2007 at 9:19 am #13481XenPixParticipantWelcome Flavivirus!
I have the Sigma 10-20mm, as Elsinore said. It’s a really spiffy lens.
There are a couple of examples http://www.farktography.net/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=869&start=15 in that thread. I’ve been a bit slack of late, but next weekend I’m off to Brussels, so I expect I will have plenty of examples from it after that, if you want to see some. 🙂

I like your style.September 7, 2007 at 1:17 pm #13483ElsinoreKeymasterBut what about the cut of his jib? 😀
September 7, 2007 at 2:00 pm #13484schneeParticipantI think his jib is just fine.
Welcome aboard Flavivirus. Hopefully your love of Vancouver will spill out in the upcoming “Tourist in your own town” theme.
September 7, 2007 at 6:33 pm #13485FlavivirusParticipantYeah… my love for Vancouver (and all of BC, really) should spill out… I think it will!
XenPixI… love…your…lens! I’m going to HongKong again in november, I think I can wait until then. HK prices are about 30% cheaper than North American… I got my 18-200 Tamron for ~180$ in HK, it, at the time, was about 260ish USD.

September 8, 2007 at 6:27 am #13487FlavivirusParticipantHah! GalleyWench! Isn’t this an odd, coincidental, circle-of-life thing 🙂 hello and thank you for the warm welcome! I look forward to seeing more of your work!
September 8, 2007 at 7:15 am #13488KlahanieParticipantIt’s a small world! 🙂
September 8, 2007 at 4:00 pm #13489ElsinoreKeymasterDo you two know each other? 😆
September 8, 2007 at 8:30 pm #13490KlahanieParticipantJust from Fark, but it was so recent and a weird coincidence. 😉
