ParticipantIt’s nice to know that I’m not the only person who takes pictures of food. I don’t usually post them to facebook, and certainly not quickly. Plus, I don’t use the 50mm lens. I just turn on the IS, brace my elbows on the table, and hope for the best. Also, I dine alone most of the time. (Farkettetographers are more than welcome to contact me at any time.)

ParticipantLooks like you eat well! OK, except for that sugarbomb…
I hate eating alone, so I wind up doing fast food (like a subway or supermarket deli).

I didn’t drive all the way to Montana to eat at some place I can find in New Mexico. Besides, some times on vacation you just have to say “I’m going to dine like price is no object.” Plus, when I’m camping out in national forests for under $20 a night, the saving allow for splurging on a $50+ dinner.
I can’t recommend any of the restaurants in Yellowstone, but Glacier, Wharton Lakes, and Grand Teton have places that will make you feel like a Rockefeller, if only for the two hours from amuse bouche to chocolate. The park guide publication recommended reservations for the Mural Room in Grand Teton. I took the time to shower, shave, and put on fresh clothes (more appropriate for fine dining than the cargo shorts and flip-flops I was wearing most of the trip) before dinner and had no problem getting a booth.
Voodoo Donuts is a local Portland bakery with 2 locations. The downtown store always has a line out the door and down the block. Now the suburban location is getting that way too since the place has acquired national attention, e.g. I saw an article listing it as one of America’s top eateries (in the “comfort food” category maybe?) in an airline magazine.
When you’ve been a bachelor as long as I have, saying “table for one” happens without any qualms. Sure, I’d prefer to have a companion for dinner, but I’m shy, quirky, and have high standards. C’est la vie. (Although, I did meet a terribly attractive actress/producer/etc. at the local film festival this evening…)

Hard to argue with that… fortunately I have a handful of friends scattered all over the west to eat with. Solo, I’m usually looking for a pub with decent food and empty enough that I can eat at the bar. Moab Brewery was a nice find for that… great bratwurst plate..

The only time I ever eat at chain restaurants while traveling is when I arrive at a hotel after all of the local places are closed, and I have to eat *something*.
(That said, I can recommend Doc’s Motorworks on Congress in Austin – ate their yesterday. Good food. Pleasant staff.)

ParticipantMy wife and I have a vacation deal that we won’t eat at any chain we can find in our home-town. This leaves some chains available (like Zaxby’s Chicken, among others) but effectively closes out a number of others. That said, at least one meal is usually at a brew pub so I can get a flight and fill my growler. It does make us more adventurous, and we learn about foods we may either have ignored/missed/avoided or never heard of. Example: given the fact that “Carolina/Georgia-style” bbq sauces are mustard-based, I’d been avoiding them for years. A few years ago, spending a couple/few weeks in GA and SC changed all of that. We’re now BIG fans.

ParticipantThat is funny. He blinks exactly three times; twice near the beginning, once near the end. I take pictures of food all the time, but never when I’m out dining, as I so rarely go out to eat. But home-cooked stuff, sure.
