I downloaded a trial version of Capture NX2 to see if it is worth the money. So I shot a bunch of pictures in NEF format and the damn program will not open them. I get an error that says “Cannot open file C:…..”.

Of course I cannot find anything about it on Nikon’s support site and google is lacking good answers. Clearly it isn’t a problem with the file since I can edit the NEF file in Picassa. I would like to use Nikon’s software to update pictures taken with a Nikon (D5000). Silly, I know. Any suggestions?

I’m a heavy CNX user and LOVE it, I think it’s worth EVERY penny! Which version did you download, 2.2.4 or 2.2.5? Are you a Windows user and if so, 32 or 64 bit? How are you trying to open it, from within CNX, View NX or Explorer? If it’s from Explorer, first try opening the file from within CNX or ViewNX instead and see if that works.

To open from Explorer, you’ll need the Codec. There was a new 32-bit version released yesterday to add support for the new cameras, but I haven’t installed it yet. http://nikonimglib.com/nefcodec/

There’s also a great CNX group on Flickr that you might want to join, I’ve learned a lot from them: http://www.flickr.com/groups/capturenx/

I downloaded the trial version which is 2.0.0. I am using Windows 7 and assume that it is 32-bit. Not sure about that last part.

I will check out the flickr group to see if I can figure it out there.

just FYI the codex installed replacing an older version but the “windows photo gallery” from windows live essentials which you need to open the photo won’t install on XP Pro with sp3. you need vista sp2 or newer.

I went back to Nikon and downloaded the trial version again. Even though the file name is the same, apparently now I have the more recent version (2.2.4). I’m not sure I understand what happened but the upshot is that it now recognizes the NEF format so I got that going for me.

Now I’m off to figure out how to use it.

Well, you’re still a version behind, the latest is 2.2.5 and there were some stability issues for some users on 2.2.4.. The latest has improved color rendering plus some other enhancements.

And thanks Curious, I wasn’t aware of that, hope I didn’t mess anyone up.

    Here are some basic tutorials:

This is a video of a workshop from a Nikon employee, it’s a bit long but goes through the entire workflow process. The first part is mostly class chatter, but the rest is so worth your time, even if you do it in sections. There are 3 parts, this is the link to the first, then you can find the others from the page:

Have fun, it’s a great product! I LOVELOVELOVE control points and am so happy with not having to mess with layers and masks. Also make sure you investigate how you can keep different versions within the one NEF file, it’s pretty slick.
