ParticipantSo this photo made the rounds of the photography blogs this week,

the photographer snapped it outside of the Manhattan courthouse and then posted it on FB trying to find the people in the photo to get a release so he could enter it in a contest. The press picked it up and it has gone viral. (He did find the couple, the are graffiti taggers who arrested tagging a building. They are milking the press attention for all it is worth)A lot people are comparing to the Vancouver Kiss:

Now I think the first photo is fine, a nice little street shot, but they aren’t even kissing, and they are walking down a Sunny street in handcuffs, it has nothing of power of the Vancouver Kiss. While the photog and the subject should be happy about the ink, I am trying to understand why this a a “news” story? I am a just curmudgeon with no love in my heart?

ParticipantIt’s not powerful, but it’s got a hot girl in it, so OMG NEWS.

ParticipantI thought Ron Howard expressed interest in making a film based upon it, and needed the model release? Well that’s what I heard, anyway.

Not a curmudgeon, just honest. Accurate, too. A comparison does not necessarily mean equivalency in power. If people are calling both similarly powerful, well… no. If, however, you’ve got kissers and police in the same photo… well then, of course.
FWIW – I never understood the Vancouver couple photo…

ParticipantOK, I’ll play the part of the curmudgeon: to me, they both scream, “Look at me! I’m more important than the events occurring around me!” And I don’t really care for that kind of self-absorbed behavior. Now if you’ll excuse me, there are some dang kids on my lawn…

I can’t disagree with this sentiment either. However, I’m (and I’m assuming ennuipoet is as well) assessing the photos’ quality as art. The behaviors of the people in the pics are a whole ‘nother discussion.

I’ll dumb it down for you:

ParticipantGood, I am glad it’s not just me. And Kes, you are most likely right, “Hot Girl!” and, I hate to say this, but if the people in the photo were, er, darker complected, I imagine the reaction would be different.

ParticipantFWIW, I don’t see anything but the most superficial comparisons between the two photos. And I personally don’t find either image compelling. They both make me wonder what’s going on. But not enough to do more than read a caption if there was one. So if just the photos posted I wouldn’t go searching for the backstory.
The weird blurred and distorted head of he cop in the forerground of the Vancouver photo is the most interesting thing about the photos to me.
