lokisbong: Looks fine to me
millera9: The difficulty doesn’t say anything about people, so I’d think it’s kosher. Though hopefully they wouldn’t be the main subject/focus.
NBD: Could still be quartz and be that brown. Maybe calcite? My college “Geology of National Parks and Monuments” class was waaaaay too long ago….cool rock, though!
January 28, 2009 at 6:18 am #20527lokisbongParticipantCool. Thanks for your opinion. I was kind of torn on whether the ocean seemed to be the focus of the pic.

The person is the focus, but the rocks are integral. See for yourself (I will probably use a slightly different crop). I know it’s kinda borderline…

…img…Not my call, but I think that’d be okay. Because like you said, the rocks are integral. I have a similar but different concept that I’m considering, where one of my buddy’s is holding a very large (lava) rock over his head.
I have decided against my bright orange “rocks being born” picture though….
January 28, 2009 at 1:38 pm #20530bucky_baconParticipantRocks with houses on top…?
Edit: Oh, I suppose that would be a cliff, as is listed in the description. n/m
January 28, 2009 at 6:25 pm #20531orionidParticipantLots of “B-sides” on this one……. Had to dig through the archives for my “shot number 3” and wound up with a bunch of “ooh, I like this, too…..”
Inspiration if anyone still needs it:
Both types of Hawaiian lava overlapping each other

http://www.buckscorner.com/farktography/rock/aapahoehoe2.jpgChinaman’s hat. Liked the atmosphere, figured it would be too hard to explain that it’s one giant rock. Plus the breakwater is a bit distracting.

http://www.buckscorner.com/farktography/rock/mahana.jpgFigured there’d be a lot like this one
http://www.buckscorner.com/farktography/rock/rockbeach.jpgLoved this one, figured attention was drawn too much to the wave, not enough to the rock for the theme, though.

January 28, 2009 at 9:55 pm #20532sooshParticipantsome of my unchosen from this week
January 28, 2009 at 9:58 pm #20533sooshParticipantI really thought I’d end up going macro this week. I’ve got a fist-sized clump of halite (salt) crystals, some garnets in granite, petrified wood, mollusk fossils, etc. Kind of ran out of time and can’t exactly set up a macro shoot in my office during the work day.
January 29, 2009 at 12:02 am #20534nobigdealParticipantI have a ton of B-Sides too. I have 15 shots to narrow down to 2 entries. I took a bunch of shots of that big hunk of whatever it is and now I can’t decide what to use!
January 29, 2009 at 12:22 am #20535mopsyParticipantAfter looking at everyone’s B sides, my entries are pathetic!. Oh well, it’s what I’ve got and I’ll post them. I’m slowly building a photo library, but you guys and gals are waaaaaaaaaay ahead of me.

I pretty much had you pegged on mountain grandeur. That’s what I would do if I had all of Alaska at my disposal. That, and buy a whole lot of thermal underwear. I guess its not much surprise that not only were all of my B-sides archived Hawaii shots, but all but one of them were from the big island, too.

I still think it looks like some form of industrial adhesive that managed to crystalize as it hardened. Almost like it should be ever so slightly rubbery to the touch. Or smoky (brown) quartz, which is not only possible, but also likely in RI.

January 29, 2009 at 1:16 am #20539orionidParticipantElsinore, it’s almost scary how similar our entries could have been. I had actually ordered a flourite octohedron off of ebay that didn’t get here yet. Although, I was going to UV expose it like the ruby. Fluorite makes a nice blue-green that’s really bright under shortwave UV.
/Edited because I failed to spell “our” correctly.
January 29, 2009 at 1:20 am #20540sooshParticipantorionid, what do you use as a UV light source? just regular black light?
