    i think it’s open to interpretation. i was thinking about your belly shots, ‘bort, and wondered if you might submit one of them (they’re gorgeous). in that instance i think the belly alone would be great because it is a time and place type shot.

    it’s in the running, for sure. and thank you! we’ve gotten some really interesting prints on watercolor paper from those, too….they’re fun to play with.

    I think the belly shots would be appropriate, too. I love pregnant belly photos, btw–they really capture a moment for sure! I hope you’ll post it here if you don’t submit it to the contest!

    Quick question: I have two photos of the same subject, taken at the same general place. The subject’s positions are distinctly different between the two photos, and both have distinct compositions and angling. Under the following Submissions Guidelines, is it still acceptable to enter both (I know it probably isn’t, but I just want to confirm this)?

    No multiple photos of your subject at different angles or composition.

    according to one club i was in in millbrae ca; a portrait is pretty much any posed picture, while a grabshot is something off the cuff where the subject probably doesnt know he’s being shot, or if he does know he’s being photographed he doesnt have time or oportunity to pose, this distiction was made because when you have 30 photographers and 4 weeks of meetings you might as well have as many different types of contests as possible

    in our club (farktography.net) it doesn’t matter a whit, but some clubs with judging make the distinction

    when i organised my website i had to weed out some grabshots that i classified as portraits, and some portraits that i classified as grabshots … just to conform as much as possible to the definitions i’d learned

    yesterday i was in a forum talking about the difference between headshots for models vs headshots for actors…

    some people are sticklers for detail…

    since you were aware that your belly was being photographed (or if you were the photographer your subject was aware that she was being photographed and posed) it would be a portrait under that definition…

    /bored out of my mind

    //is it 5:00 pst yet…

    just a general opinion question – i have some shots that i consider to be portraits even though it’s not a photo of someone’s face. for example – a ballet dancer’s feet. or a pregnant woman’s belly. ok, those are the two that i have. 😛

    what are peoples’ thoughts on that? i feel that it captures the essence of what that person is doing at that time – their character and the place they are in their life at that moment, which (to me) qualifies it as a portrait.

    great shot…
