Final idea before I shut up and accept whatever changes are going to happen…

What if a line is added to the boobies post saying “Any entries submitted before Wednesday will be deleted”?

It shouldn’t take too much effort to add a deletion comment to the “victim” – “Deleted due to being submitted too early (see Boobies)”

That would keep it similar to the current system, but it would cause the mods to do a little extra work. It would also minimize OBOs for TFers who have something to do in the evenings, but can post earlier in the day (vacationers would still need OBOs).

I’m going to add my nickels worth in.

I think the point of posting the Photoshop Contest a week in advance was to give people tome to do their photoshoping. We have this forum for that. I’m not saying it’s a bad idea, but we have two different kinds of contests.

I can also see a potential for copycats, if I take a shot and post early, someone could try to make a better shot ofthe same idea. They way it is now, you have no real idea what anyone is doing until post time. It’s forces you to come up with your own ideas and it’s always a surprise to see what gets posted. I’d aslo like to avoid the ever popular PS tennis matches.

That being said, I’m for anything that increases participation in the Contests. I say we give it a try and see how it goes.

I’m all about adding Farktography to the contests tab if only to make it easier for me to know when they’ll hit the main page, and to find them when they go live without having to look all over the place.

I am in favor of anything that allows and encourages more participation and thus more voting.

I realize some people get very competitive about Farktography and work hard at developing their own ideas. You wind up feeling very possessive of your work. That’s only natural but: no one has an exclusive license on photographing anything (staplers for instance). If we allow early posting, someone might rip off your shot. I’ve noticed the Photoshoppers are really good about offering to delete entries that wind up unintentionally parroting someone else’s prior post. I think most Farkers would show the same courtesy for Farktography, and if the posters don’t self police, the voters will. You’re influenced already by everything you see and hear and everything you put out in this digital space influences others, so I don’t know what kind of purity we’re supposed to enforce by limiting the amount of time we have to post.

As for me, since I don’t have regular internet access and frankly I’m not driving 40 miles every Wednesday night to find a Starbucks with wifi (like I’m posting from right now), if the thread was open for posts right now for the next two contests, I’d be posting entries in them.

While I cannot speak for all the Photoshoppers, I can speak as one. There is a code of courtesy that prevails and people who do not follow tend not to last long on Fark. Even if someone does violate the rules, the Moderators have always been quick to respond and correct the situation. Since we have a Mod on staff, as it were, we can assume the issue of ripping off ideas will be dealt with in a timely and professional manner. 🙂

We’re also pretty good at letting a ‘liter slide if the entry is close enough to the contest going live that it’s obvious they had a similar idea with no fore-knowledge (which is where I would fall, most of the time – I know ahead of time that Wednesday’s going to be a long night, but it does allow me to get caught up on stuff, so there’s that…).

I don’t know if it would change participation much if it appeared in the Contest section all week or not. I would like to see it appear in Contests instead of/in addition to the standard submission queue just so it is easier to find for me. I suppose it doesn’t much matter to me.

I think ultimately we should give it a try and see what comes of it. I’m not sure we could force it to be a case of no posts until Wednesday kind of thing (that would partially negate the benefit to having it available), but I could pursue that line of questioning. I’m thinking maybe try a week ahead initially, rather that 2, and then see what happens with that. For tonight’s thread, I’m linking back to the discussion thread rather than the main description page. Think that may be a better way to go there no matter how we handle the Contests tab issue.

Hmmm…few months late here but on topic all the same.

I have been with Farktography from right near the start with a lot of contests entered. However, I have also missed quite a lot of contests due to the fact that I work shift work and am at work for a lot of Wednesday nights.

Recently, I started working straight graveyard shift in a 4 on 4 off pattern, so my days off rotate during the week. This screws up my sense of what day it is a lot of the time and I miss Wednesdays on my days off because of that, and also because I am at work a lot of the times when the contest goes live.

I have also lived and worked in France, where sorting out what time of day it is on Fark became a challenge as well and I missed a lot of contests.

Having the ability now to post up early, without the voting of course, makes things so much easier for those of us who work and live different to what is considered “the norm”. Now I am able to log into Fark, take a look and see that there is a contest pending and load up photos so that I don’t miss the contest. This makes me very happy.

This also helps boost the numbers of contest participants, since we now cater to those who work odd shifts or live in different time zones around the world. Hopefully this will boost awareness as well of the non-participants so that we can get more people checking out our work.

In the end, I think that this is a big win for all of us. To be honest, I have never not posted because I see that someone has posted up a kick ass photo that I have no chance against. Seeing what everyone has posted and being able to enjoy those photos makes me happier than trying to remember to look for the contest or remembering that I missed it because I was working.

Now if we could just find a way to keep Farktography at the top of the main page for 24 hours after it goes live…;)
