How do I get a press pass?

Does this guy know what he’s talking about?

Can I borrow your press pass?

That sounds about like what I’ve heard is the best way to go about it. Trick is to get enough stuff that’s recent and paper-worthy…trying to cover local events and submitting them to the local rag might be a good way to get your foot in the door.

Here’s how high tech the government is with their press passes (as of 1995, anyway. I only kept my very first ones)…

I was working for a commercial photographer in Virginia at the time, so I really didn’t have to “do” anything to get it other then be assigned to the press conference by my boss. Of course there is the background check etc to get through, but you don’t physically do anything to get it. I’d post some of my images but they are all on slide film since that was the best medium to go to press with back before digital. I have some shots of Senator Kerry from 95 before anyone knew who he was.
