    from the farq:

    # Nudity, partial nudity, or adult content: Naked people, sadly, just aren’t safe for work. Exposed breasts, nipples (including ones visible through material), weeners and beavers, and asses aren’t permitted. It doesn’t have to be complete nudity for it to be out of place at the office – a good example reference point is the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. It’s not nudity, but most workplaces would frown on looking at it on company time – so anything you see in there shouldn’t be posted here. Same for Page 3 girls, for you British lot. A more general reference point would be to think about what you wouldn’t want your boss to find in your browser cache. Dildos, vibrators, butt plugs, Ben-Wa balls, masturbation sleeves, inflatable dolls, RealDolls(tm), and any other sex toys or devices used to penetrate or be penetrated are definitely not acceptable.

    # Graphic content: Images that would make many people feel ill such as cadavers, autopsies, surgeries, vomiting, severed limbs, alarming deformities, roadkill, dead animals and bodily functions such as urine and feces. Images in full, or in part of, or resembling Goatse man, Tubgirl, or anything equally as disgusting will be deleted and HTML will be suspended on your accounts. Images containing child pornography will be reported to your ISP and local/federal law enforcement agencies. The use of images depicting well-known tragedies such as 9/11 is not forbidden, but usually frowned upon. Images which depict people actually dying (falling to their death, engulfed in flame, being blown up) should not be used, and the same holds true for such images involving animals.

    # Borderline Image Posts: If you’re posting an image, and you’re not quite sure whether it falls under the “safe” category or not, then we strongly recommend linking it (“a href” instead of “img src”) with a very clear warning that it may not be safe. That way people can make their own decision whether they should chance it or not, and you’ll be spared the ire of your fellow Farkers. This is why, for example, Boobies links on the main page can be OK — they’re labeled “not safe for work” so users can decide for themselves. Inline images don’t give a reader that choice, so they should always be safe.

    # Image Control: Make sure that any image links you post are under your explicit control or you may find yourself in timeout. Linking an image to another site that is not under your control can often result in that site changing the contents of what you linked. Think about that for a second or two, before you blithely wander off to another thread and find yourself banned. Hyperlink at your own risk to your account.

    # Responsibility for Posted Images: By hitting the submit button, you are warranting that you have permission to post an image, even if it is subject to copyright protection. If you submit an image that is later determined to be a copyright infringement, we will remove that image and comply with all legal directives related to that image. While fark is the legal owner of all copyrights in content on this site, we will comply with any lawful demands related to all copyrighted work. We also think copyright attorneys are overzealous and overpaid, but some of them are kinda cute.

so i would say to link it if it’s questionable.

NSFW material definitely has to be linked and not placed in the thread, listing the thread as being NSFW in the headline would not be an exception.
