A few days ago a TV station had their fall launch in downtown Toronto. They brought our some of the stars of the shows. Now it was the CBC so anyone outside Canada probably has never heard of these people. They also have a ‘reality show’ called Battle of the Blades; they pair up former NHL players and figure skaters and they have to learn a routine each week and are judged on it, the losers go home. Anyway, I had some time to kill before classes and it was near by, so I took some photos, sort of like the paparazzi except, well we were all nice.

One of the figure skaters (she’s about 5′-0″, 97lbs mostly teeth)

What I learned from this is: a) I need to work on my action shots in low light (cloudy day) and b) I don’t want to do this for a living, it’s kinda boring.

Agreed. I got a free ticket for one of his shows and still felt ripped off afterwards. The unfunniest of all-time has to be this guy though – http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_zxsbVMrOUNw/ShhHQcLkR8I/AAAAAAAACIw/bZ9hTa040Jk/s400/1mike.jpg

PJ Stock, he’s on HNIC! In Canada that makes him an A-list celebrity.

Dude, it’s spelled Georges Laraque, you probably don’t want to offend one of the most feared enforcers to ever lace em up. Or Habs fans.

“High ratings” and “CBC” don’t go together unless you’re talking sporting events. Like curling.

FWIW I thought the pics turned out good. The one of Erin Wassname was my fave.
RE the cloudy day shooting – isn’t that supposed to be better shooting conditions than bright sun? More diffuse light = less harsh shadows, no?

i thought they were good too. also Erin. and yes slight clouds do temper shadows.

re action shots, i’m not able to see the EXIF data so it’s hard to tell what you might want to do differently. but as you know bumping up the ISO setting will get you faster shutter speeds. your DOF looks ok to me. actually i’m not seeing blur either so unless you have a bunch you couldn’t use ……

    I should know that, I am a Habs fan….d’oh.

There were a lot of pic that did not make it, these are some of the better ones.

I didn’t actually think about the settings when I was shooting these, which is also something I learned. See, everything in life is a learning experience.

That sounds like a funny premise for a show, is it good?

I’ve only seen bits of it, but what I have seen is pretty entertaining. It’s not Olympic caliber figure skating, but it’s fun to watch the likes of Georges Laraque and Tie Domi attempt figure skating. Even the practices are funny as you see these little women bullying NHL players around.

If you’re in Canada you can stream it from CBC.ca.

I’ll look on YouTube and see if there’s anything. The funniest stuff would’ve probably been when they were first beginning and still all clumsy and uncomfortable. They should make them wear Johnny Weir type outfits too!
