I have to got thru all my setting prior to each outing… I have been burned too by being set to ISO 1600/3200 in bright sunlight and ruining what would have been great pictures. I also ALWAYS shoot in RAW, that way you have a lot more latitude in correcting color balance issues in post.

Learn your viewfinder display and make a habit before snapping a shot to look at your shutter speed. This will also be a tell tale if you are set to too high an ISO (low ISO is a dead giveaway click……..click 🙂

I use my Red Sox hat as an improvised french flag when doing long night exposures… As for old gear I have shot thru the veiw finder if my OM10 using my 20D. I know for a fact that isnt a common use of a old body. It was a real pain and I was REALLY bored… (i’ll see if I can find the photo’s outta my 12K+ library)

The easiest way around photographing strangers in public is to get a good telephoto lens and shoot quick if you are sans a telephoto lens. Plus if you are quick you get the real moment and they dont react to you… This is tough when shooting w/ a big telehomkin’ DSLR. It attracts unwanted attention (especially when overseas)

I like it, I am a big fan of hard light. You should give it another go w/ a black background. It will be less distractiong and keep all the focus on you.
