Interesting – apparrently people were quite interested in comparing a modified photo to the original. Usually my flickr viewing stats show a bit of a spike on Thursdays from contest viewers, but this week it’s huge, and most of them were from people clicking the link to the unmodded original version of my photo. I thought that seemed like a natural thing to add to the post, but it looks like almost no one else decided to do it.
I thought about but I didn’t process any of my shots other than resize and sharpen. Then I ran em through the tilshift site and did any other work to them after. So my originals woulda sucked.
June 12, 2009 at 12:11 am #22539lokisbongParticipantIt didn’t occur to me to post the original versions of mine either but I am almost tied for my best vote getters already so I guess it wasn’t too important. My o’s would have been pretty boring anyways
June 12, 2009 at 12:20 am #22540olavfParticipantYeah, that didn’t occur to me until after I’d posted either. In retrospect it probably doesn’t matter for either of my shots anyway.
sleeping I’ll post my server stats when I get home if you want to see the perfect example of Farktography loading.

Oh, no I wasn’t implying it meant more votes (often my lowest vote getter has the most hits recorded, and I didn’t get a ton this time), I just thought it was interesting.
June 12, 2009 at 1:55 am #22542bucky_baconParticipantI’m really quite surprised about my Vegas entry. I thought that was my best one far and away. But alas only 4 votes? This process never ceases to baffle me. All I can figure is that I should have cropped out the left side to help focus on the effect. Honestly interested in a serious critique/criticism. Here’s an update:
http://www.speedpicks.com/vegas2.jpgOh then there’s this one that I took on Tuesday and completely forgot about until I uploaded some pics today. Whoops. Well I’ll share it anyhow, as I’m completely addicted to this tilt-shifting now. Maybe I can use it for the hootenanny.

Here’s an update:
http://www.speedpicks.com/vegas2.jpgThat image doesn’t show a very strong “miniature” effect to me. I might try moving the zone of focus down towards the bottom of the image and see if that works better – from what I’ve seen you need an obviously out of focus background behind the subject for this to work well, and the background you’ve blurred here is far enough away that the blurring isn’t really obvious. You’re trying to simulate shallow depth of field, but it could as easily be atmospheric haze in this shot.
June 12, 2009 at 2:47 am #22544bucky_baconParticipantThanks sleeping. That makes sense now. When looking at the original it was the left side of the image that stood out, because it was further back than the focus area but was still in focus so it didn’t look right to the eye. So instead of fixing it I just cropped it out, which failed to fix the issue with the remaining background which you pointed out. Elementary I say.
Ok. Enough out of me.
June 12, 2009 at 2:59 am #22545olavfParticipantbucky bacon if it makes you feel better, way back when this contest was announced, I immediately thought of this, and then promptly forgot when I went to do pics for this week.

that first one works fantastically.
June 12, 2009 at 3:16 am #22547olavfParticipantthat first one works fantastically.
Thanks. Really too late in the game to enter it now though. Maybe I’ll save it for that ‘special effects’ thread.
June 12, 2009 at 3:20 am #22548bucky_baconParticipantthat first one works fantastically.
Yeah, I’ll second that.
June 12, 2009 at 3:33 am #22549swampaParticipantI’ll third it!
I think the Vegas image also suffer from a lack of contrast/colour. The ones that really pop in this contest seem to have at least one of those elements.
June 12, 2009 at 4:08 pm #22550sooshParticipantI was just browsing the FSM, and it looks like sleeping and swampa2 are getting really close to breaking 6,000 all-time votes.
June 12, 2009 at 5:15 pm #22551millera9Participantbucky_bacon, welcome to the list of “Greatest Entries Evar”! http://www.schneeworld.com/fsm/static-reports/greatestentriesevar.html

didn’t even occur to me.
it occurred to me, but the originals mostly weren’t all that interesting by themselves… at least compared to the tilted ones. 😉
I’m learning tons so I’m having a blast and will keep entering.
that’s a great attitude and it’s exactly how i feel about farktography. 😀 i’ve learned sooooooo much and even though i know — sometimes i am harshly reminded! — i have a LOT more to learn, it is just wonderful. i’m glad you’re here to stay!
