What I’ve found tends to work best is three great but wildly different shots. The problem is anticipating what the voters might consider “great”.
speaking of which:

would anyone care to opine?
/daft question…July 13, 2011 at 9:13 pm #30661orionidParticipantI like the kite surfer
July 13, 2011 at 9:14 pm #30660ravnosticParticipantWind’s up would be my choice as well. simple image, no distractions–I love it. That surfer shot is excellent.
July 13, 2011 at 9:21 pm #30659UranusParticipantwell….that was easy.
thanks guys. hopefully won’t get scuppered by the late post….July 13, 2011 at 10:13 pm #30656U-ManParticipantI’m leaving work but want to throw this out before I get distracted at home. I’ll probably use one of these from our Sanibel spring break this year. This is my little one on the beach. The one where she is picking shells is very “shore-ie”. It’s a pretty good pic. But I like the sunset-lit portrait of her better. Should I just use that? Or is it not really in the spirit of the theme? It was taken within minutes of the other one. I’m sure I can use it some time, some where..

http://photos.imageevent.com/ulle17/fark/aa_9799.jpgJuly 13, 2011 at 10:25 pm #30655KestranaParticipantYou could use either but I don’t know that Farkpublik would see the 2nd as having anything to do with the beach.
July 13, 2011 at 10:27 pm #30654CauseISaidSoParticipantU-Man, you’re a great portait photographer (and it doesn’t hurt that your subjects are so cute) but I’m not sure that last one will get any traction in this contest. The first one is also cute and more in line with the theme, I think.
July 13, 2011 at 10:34 pm #30653niaghParticipantAre ancient shorelines (now high and dry) ok? There is a body water in the background of the shot that currently occupies what was the bottom of the ancient lake, but strictly speaking it’s not the same body of water that formed the ancient (750 – 1500 A.D.) shoreline feature that is the focus of the shot.
July 13, 2011 at 10:52 pm #30652stupidoParticipantIs this one too far from the shore?

July 13, 2011 at 11:27 pm #30650KestranaParticipantniagh sure as long as it was obviously at one point a shore.
stupido that’s fineJuly 13, 2011 at 11:38 pm #30649U-ManParticipantK and CISS, thanks for the input. Mrs. U-Man helped straighten me out, too. I just like the serious portrait and want to use it. But it doesn’t work without text – and even then it doesn’t fit all that well.
I have several personal favorites that I want to use here but will end up passing in favor of pics that fit the theme better. They’ll be B’s later this evening.
July 14, 2011 at 12:07 am #30648ravnosticParticipantI gotta add CISS is right, U-Man; you do fantastic portraiture work.

July 14, 2011 at 1:01 am #30646U-ManParticipantThanks for the portrait compliments guys. 🙂
I stopped looking at my files. Perhaps there’s something better in there but I was messing with the county fair pics last night. And, well, I’m happy with my entries. I really considered a fireworks pic but figured they would be pretty popular tonight. Here are some B’s –
