ParticipantMy hunch is that since flickr tends to lean towards the photographer or artist showcases, that they default the compression to zero (quality to maximum) when they resize the images, attempting to preserve as much data as possible.
What I don’t understand is how can the file they send out from their server be so much larger than the file I uploaded to it? I appreciate that Flickr doesn’t hash my full size files, but even with zero compression the file simply should not be bigger than it’s source.

Participant/i have since actually purchased it.
You purchased the upgrade for the one you already had, didn’t you?
/It’s okay, that’s how I did it.
//And the one that was “provided” came shortly after loaning out my college ID for the academic discount. So, I kinda have more claim to it than the person that paid for it.Well, I didn’t say I purchased it for me. My wife went into business with a friend and needed a uniform version for the two of them. I bought CS5 through the university I am affiliated with. They use that. I still use CS4.
🙂

Participantwhat’s a beer lens?
You get an old lens and soak it in a pint of beer…. it gets naturally blurry. Kind of like Beer goggles for your Nikon.

ParticipantYou use it after it dries, right?

Thanks both! I really like the dreamlike effect. And when I was thinking about this week, I kept saying over and over that I needed some way to make one tree stand out amongst a gazillion others, and then I took that shot and went “ooohhh….”

Actually, Miller, I need you to repost all three–the message to click for bigger needs to be just a simple “click for bigger” message this week.
Otherwise all entries should have voting now.
Also,
What I don’t understand is how can the file they send out from their server be so much larger than the file I uploaded to it? I appreciate that Flickr doesn’t hash my full size files, but even with zero compression the file simply should not be bigger than it’s source.
Crap, this must be why I couldn’t post my third image. This makes no damn sense. I tested all three of my images in scratchpad and had no problems, but when contest time rolled around, Fark kept saying my third image was unfetchable. I tried several times and finally told it to grab the “large” instead of “original” (which were the same). But when I saw your post about the file sizes, I checked, and yes, it’s increased my file size by a shitload. It’s now 180k when the file I uploaded was 119k. I almost never upload anything over 100k and damn sure don’t upload anything over 130k. Given this is 180k now, it will probably break at some point. My first two entries were uploaded long ago, but the third was uploaded this afternoon after Flickr switched over to the new page. Time to complain….
