Thanks. Catching those made me re-look at the repost checking code and realize I needed to compensate for the variations in flickr links and remove trailing parameters (everything after the “.jpg” in the link) when comparing links. Doing that reveals about another 30 reposts over past contests that I missed when I first cleaned the data (including one more in this contest – sorry, LoveSandwich :(). The good news is that it’ll automatically catch these kinda things in the future.
Eventually, I’d like to move to a non-link-based dup checking mechanism (something like what schnee called “eigenimages”). But that’s likely a very long ways down the road…
Good deal about automagically catching the Flickr stuff! Don’t worry too much about the stuff that got by. Once upon a time I could catch probably 75% or more of the repeats on my own just because I remembered enough of the entries. Now? Yeah, not so much. Too many contests and photos since then lol.
September 23, 2011 at 7:28 am #28244Plamadude30kParticipantOh man, CISS, if you implement eigenimages at bibliostats, you may become my favorite person ever. I may have to volunteer some of my time to help out with that…
September 23, 2011 at 4:28 pm #28245CauseISaidSoParticipantPlama, as awesome as a cross-collaboration sounds, I’m not sure my ego could withstand working with someone who’s actually still a master of higher math. “Use it or lose it” is a harsh reality for me and my math skills. By “implement”, I meant “integrate with an open-source library created by people who still understand this kind of stuff.” 🙂 The library I’ve got my eye on is at http://phash.org.
September 23, 2011 at 6:21 pm #28246ElsinoreKeymasterYeah, schnee had talked about doing Eigenimages, but never had the time.
Also also wik: So last weekend was girl scout camping, and this week is boy scout camping. It only just dawned on me that this ones for two days, so I won’t even be around tomorrow. I can put the thread congrats up late this afternoon before leaving; even though it seems waaaay early to do that, I think it’s safe to say that aspidites has this one in the bag (and rightfully so!).
September 23, 2011 at 6:38 pm #28247CauseISaidSoParticipantI’d agree that it’s pretty safe to congratulate aspidites at this point. Heck, I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t end up doubling the second place for total votes.

I’m not so sure how applicable the term “Master of Higher Math” is to me, even though it sounds pretty cool. I do know a bit, but my weakness is the programming-I know just enough to do exactly what I want (although not necessarily efficiently) and no more. Using stuff from a library is probably a WAY safer bet. Also easier. And quicker.

September 26, 2011 at 12:25 am #28254KestranaParticipantVery nice. Congrats!
September 26, 2011 at 12:40 am #28255CauseISaidSoParticipantWhy aren’t these lists in the same order?
If everyone on the list entered in all 12 contests represented by the sliding quarter, then they would be the same. However, say person A and person B each only entered in 11 out of the 12 past contests, 10 of which are the same and 1 of which is different. Their vote totals could be tied, but if person A got 20 votes in a contest that had 1000 total (NVC of 20) and person B got 20 votes in a contest that had 2000 total (NVC of 10), then person A would have the greater summed percentage of total votes across the contests, even though they both had the same actual vote totals.
Does that clear it up?
p.s. BTW, loved your balloon shot.
September 26, 2011 at 1:07 am #28256sleepingParticipantIf everyone on the list entered in all 12 contests represented by the sliding quarter, then they would be the same.
That’s not right is it? Unless I’m missing something, all it would need for them to be different is a significant variance between the NVC and the standard vote totals for the contests in that quarter?
September 26, 2011 at 1:21 am #28257CauseISaidSoParticipantYou’re right, sleeping, my bad. If we simplify to the smallest example, let’s say person A & B both enter the same two contests. Contest #1 has 1000 votes total so NVC=Votes, person A gets 10 votes/NVC and person B gets 20 votes/NVC. Contest #2 has 2000 votes total so NVC=Votes/2, person A gets 20 votes/10 NVC and person B gets 10 votes/5 NVC. Both people have 30 votes total, but person A has 20 NVC while B has 25 NVC.
