And somehow I missed an entire page of discussion on the topic when I chimed in…

Depends on if you are photographing on public or private land.
I would probably contact the Public Affairs Visual Information Manager
listed on this pagehttp://www.keesler.af.mil/units/multimediapage/index.asp
to see what their policy is for civilians photographing on or near military installations.

Lack of sleep last night almost certainly had something to do with it 😆

aspidites that’s more the answer i was looking for. thank you for yours though. there is public parking right along the beach and i’d bet that with some judicious aiming i could look like i was shooting scenic shots or seagulls and get planes in the background.
but in this day and age and for a farktography contest it’s not worth pushing the boundary.

As some of the Facebooking farktographers know, I recently had the blue and red flashers behind my vehicle while photographing two water towers right next to a federal prison. That dude was there in, like, two minutes. It all turned out OK but it was uncomfortable.
A phone call beforehand is likely a good idea.

Speaking as a former USAF cop, I can tell you that you may legally photography any aircraft in flight from public space. No police officer, military member or private security may legally prevent you from engaging in this activity.
None of this means they will not attempt to do exactly that.
I would check around locally to see if there is a location where photographers usually photograph, if the base is used to seeing people there then you shouldn’t be hassled. A phone call to Public Affairs MIGHT help, but unless things are dramatically different than in my day that information is usually not passed on.
September 20, 2011 at 2:00 am #28169olavfParticipantCurious if you’re on the beach and shoot a couple of the planes flying by you shouldn’t have a problem. Most of the people I’ve heard that have been hassled at seem to be shooting the gates, or around those areas. Just try not to look too…curious.
U-man when I shot the East Gate to Folsom State Prison, that was a really weird experience. You’re completely allowed to park in the main lot, walk through the outer gate/wall, and shoot around the area there – but, you can’t go past the first stop sign (there’s a museum on one side of the street, and the post office and paymaster offices are on the other From there, you can see the prison gate, but aren’t allowed within about 100 yards unless you’ve checked in at the visitor’s building (ironically, outside that outer wall) and escorted past where I could stand. You’re not allowed to go into the community there either. (That’s amusingly named ‘Represa’ but means ‘dam’ in Spanish, because the original Folsom Dam was built right off the prison grounds). And there were several large signs around the place warning you not to take pictures of the prisoners.
I opted to leave my camera bag in the car and wear the camera openly, and just put one lens in my pocket. It was all just a weird feeling.
September 21, 2011 at 12:28 am #28218ravnosticParticipantJust had a thought; what about a shot in which I’m airborne? You can see a piece of the plane along the bottom edge (not that I’d go with it, but just asking).
September 21, 2011 at 2:47 am #28219olavfParticipantSo long as you’re not being held up by something, why not Rav? I expect to see more than one chicken bukkit this week.

If the plane was the main focus of the shot I’d think that could work, but if its just a border for a landscape type shot that might be pushing it a little.

i’m going to use a shot taken a couple of years ago of a plane flying into the regional airport at gulfport. it was one of those “oh there’s a plane snap a picture” things. couldn’t get to the coast this weekend for new plane shots either at kessler afb or gulfport airport.
and while i appreciate the serious responses to my original comment it was tongue in cheek. given my bad temper and long history of telling the man to fuck off i’ve learned to stay well away from certain situations.
