Normally I’d be flattered but if that picture doesn’t come down soon I *will* Farkback and ask that the entire thread be yanked if need be. It’s upsetting me, it’s *really* upsetting the wife, and I certainly would not have posted it had I known that would be one of the parameters of the contest.

I mean, you can tell where it came from, my goddamn copyright is still in the corner.

I don’t see why you should wait, I’d farkback immediately.
What I meant earlier was that people who want to protect their images should be actively taking steps to do so.

Google farktography and you’ll see a bunch of sites rehosting contests. Most of them a heck of a lot less ethical than Fark (probably all, I mean, they’re stealing fark content).

    But, being thieves, they hotlink.
I don’t suppose any technically inclined folks have a better solution than pulling or renaming or whatever your images after the contest is over?

I honestly don’t care if anyone wants to photoshop one of my photos, but I would expect an email or something making sure I was cool with it. I know they’re used to pulling images from anywhere and using them, but we should definitely have been consulted.

The submitter fixed it, which is the way I’d rather go, because especially in this case I’d rather he understand why, and that it’s really not personal. After all, we’ve had cross-collaboration before and I don’t think the average joe understands that this isn’t that case.

interestingly enough, I did google, and though I didn’t dig too far in I found a lot of sites with links to contests, and links run by Farktographers. Direct hotlinking not so much, but given millera9‘s thing today I know I’ll be paying a lot more attention.

I don’t pull my images after the contest because I watermark them, and I figured that that would be enough. We’ll see how that goes moving forward though.

soosh those are my thoughts exactly. in fact, I’ve given permission after the fact when I’ve found my stuff being used. And I would have been *totally* cool with this being a crossover contest – but I would have chosen different pictures.

I never bothered with watermarking, so I don’t know how much of a difference that makes, but man, my stuff has popped up everywhere.
From crazy eastern European forums full of child porn to crocheting blogs. And I barely have any content, let alone talent, a reliable host etc.
I’ve never gotten an email asking if they could use my images for anything. They might mention where they got it though, which is nice. I like it; but if I didn’t, I would be really mad.

For example, a really long time ago, before I had a camera and was in college, a friend of mine shot this for me. I’m pretty sure, underneath all that smudging, there used to be his watermark.

Of course, I only know because I’m really self absorbed and spend hours searching for myself online.

I think this will be resolved amicably. The submitter of the thread meant no harm, and he realizes why there would be concerns over it at this point. He posted this in the PSAEF:

    RE: Photoshop/Farktography Mashup

As the submitter of the Photoshop/Farktography Mashup, I have to say that while I still think that it would be fun, I’d prefer o see it go away for awhile. I have several reasons for saying this.

    1. I didn’t read the Boobies in the farktography thread. It explicitly states “Legal: All photographers submitting photos to this contest are the legal copyright holders for the photos submitted and the photos are not to be considered free for any other use without written consent from the submitting photographers.” In other words The submitters have every right to expect not to be be ‘shopped without permission.

    2. Even without the above legal notice, I didn’t think about how the owners of the photographs might react until after I submitted it to the queue. I was actually relieved when it went red the first time. The last thing that I wanted to do is to cause discord. The fact that the owner of a photograph has already objected just confirms that more thought and planning needs to be put into the idea.

    3. Some of the posts in the farktography forum are (rightfully) emphatically against this idea.

    4. Given the above, if we are going to do something like this, it should be with the prior knowledge and approval of the farktography submitters.

I sincerely apologize for any causing controversy. No disrespect was intended.

Gwinny or passing Moderator: Please remove thread 4389057 (pops) from the queue.

/For those of you have already posted in the thread – I’m sorry. that is some fine work. I hate to see it wasted.

I’ve extended an invitation for him (and any of the PS’ers) to join us here and help us come up with a crossover theme we can do together. It’s been to long since we’ve done one, and they’re fun.

Part of me would love to see what would be done with them, but at the same time I would have liked to have the option to opt out ahead of time before posting.

That’s exactly my feeling, I think.

I really, really like the idea of the crossover threads, and kinda wish they were done more often. there are just a very few things I’d rather that weren’t done with, and I’d like to know ahead of time so I can choose things appropriately.

when i posted the boobies to this thread i had no idea what if any conversation there had been behind the scenes. and frankly i was a bit worried that there hadn’t been any or if some not enough. seems my worries were well founded.

so we now have the chance to start over. i’m proposing that a Farktography mod or admin start a sticky thread (perhaps in the contests section) where we can debate the pros and cons, decide on what rules will apply and how the new contest boobies (or perhaps a second special notice post) will alert the participants that their photos may be used in a photoshop contest.

these can be fun and it seems there is a general consensus to do one.

Wow… the things you miss while working second shift. I agree with both the sentiment that there should be prior notification, as well as there should be more collaboration themes. Any of mine would usually be fair game, but it would have been nice to have prior notification so that I could have consulted with pangolyn on the $20 shot.

same here. I agree it would be fun to see what could be done with something I meant to have this done to.my pics this week were for the most part not good fodder for a photoshop contest anyway.
