ParticipantThanks, all… I think I owe a friend and his wife dinner. They twisted my arm and insisted that I enter it into the competition. I’m surprised it won, to be honest… I mean, I was very happy with the image, but I only did it to see if I could (and maybe have an eye-catching desktop image).
I have yet to find out how much I won, 1st place is 25% of the total entry fees collected in my division at $5 a pop. There were a couple hundred entries already hanging when I brought mine in on the first day, but keep in mind there were several divisions- each with their own winners. Maybe I’ll get enough to recoup the money I spent on framing and printing. 🙂

ParticipantI can gamma out the blowout well enough, but lose some of details elsewhere. HDR would be perfect for the shot.
Lots of agreement here, HDR would treat that scene very well I think. You could even gamma out the blowouts and oh-so-gently tonemap to recover the darker details, even without bracketed exposures (especially if you’ve done the shoot in RAW). I’ve gotten to the point where tonemapping is a routine process for almost all of my shots. As long as you don’t push it off into the weeds of surrealism it adds a lot of clarity to the image without looking artificial.

ParticipantWeird, I thought I remembered the train conductor taking the ticket. B+W I do myself (soon to be color, too!), color I take to the local mini-lab if it’s 35mm. When I lived in NY, I’d take the medium format to a local pro-lab, but since there’s nothing like that around here, I’m going to mail to Dwayne’s until I get color chemistry.
I will always miss film partly because I never took the opportunity to play with it. It’s an art and a science, with no immediate feedback like one gets with digital. I’ll prolly never do film, but rather likely will appreciate seeing the work of those who know what they’re doing. It’s fun sh!t, and I’ve missed out. I find it hard to apply the term “Art” to digital photography, at least in my case.

ParticipantI still have to go thru a mental translator for “Fark The World” LOL
Tho I’m glad the ‘net has co-opted FTx with FTW… it’s clear, concise and good news.

ParticipantOH! Dunno how much into post work you are, but shooting in shutter priority will allow you to shoot say a dozen shots with the lens cap on somewhere in the middle of the shoot so you can turn the in-camera noise reduction off. You’ll double your FPS at the expense of having to subtract an average of those “darks” as a first step in post.

ParticipantMy condolences. Bubblehead or civilian attached to the industry?
Neither, actually. I was one of those that blew thru the coursework just to have MARF kick my ass. Prototype’s a biatch, residency for nukes if you will. It broke me. I’m glad it did; you only take the best for a job like that and I really don’t think I was ready for it. It ain’t easy, and most folks just have no idea. Hat’s off, and glad you made it (I assume).

Participant“For The Win”…
And yeah, it’s not intuitive… years ago I heard FTN all the the time, completely different. I thought it was just me. I meant that in a very positive fashion. 🙂

ParticipantOh, FTW. Especially the escalator. They’re all nice, tho… there’s something about an urban setting devoid of people that’s kind of surreal. I’ve been tempted to do a series of locations and mask&stack just to get that effect.
For some reason, that last shot brings memories of the short film “World Builder”…

I wondered for the longest time over the coincidence that many of your shoots were very near to places I’ve been. I was stationed at Knolls way back in the 80’s, and spent a while on Planet Groton as well.
/apparently you now have 2 stalkers 😉

ParticipantI looked up the stats and it appears that both lenses are f5.6 when zoomed in, so if you’re not going to be right on top of things I’d go with the 55-200 myself unless you’re looking to get the whole field in some shots. Hopefully it’s lit well enough that you won’t have to pan all your shots at 1600. Besides, a little motion blur would probably go well with the subject.

ParticipantI wanna hang with you some boring saturday…

Participant/me raises hand
Yeah, I’m up with the live view (tho I wish the 5DII had an articulating screen)… it never fails that I wind up mounted on a tripod shooting straight up or with the legs splayed out flat with the screen inaccessible. Live view is a godsend for focusing on stars.

ParticipantSeconds on the congrats!
No help for your need here tho, I’m in the same boat… well, as far as needing a printer, that is. I’ve yet to sell anything of mine.
