side question – I’m using flickr to host my images, and when I tried to post the first upload of one of my pictures (this one http://www.flickr.com/photos/ilpadrino03/5575932758/ ), I couldn’t post on the fark thread because it was too large. I then resized it on photoshop, posted it again, and it still wouldn’t post to the size I wanted – I had to downgrade it (from medium-large to just medium).

My question is – how do you get the large-sized pictures posted, like U-man’s “Three Smashed Girls.” or Kestrana’s “Chihuly Glass Walkway”? Do you just sacrifice image quality to increase the size? I feel the bottle’s smashing into dust is lost on a smaller scale in my picture.

Also FLickr has a strange quirk of increasing the file size for the “other than original sizes” – meaning if you upload a 640 x whatever pixel photo, the “large 640 pixel” size on Flickr is actually a much larger file size than the original photo even though they are the same dimensions. So if you upload at 640, make sure you use original size. That’s what I had to do for my first picture this week but the link I provided popped to the original picture in my photostream which is full size. I use Adobe’s “save for web” option which allows me to look at the picture and chose my file quality to a certain extent while staying below 150K.

Thanks for the tips, Elsinore and Kestrana. I’ll be fiddling around with Flickr and figuring it out with your suggestions 🙂

There are LOTS of good pictures this week, some really nice stuff. That being said, I swear that my instincts for posting are 180 degrees off. The Glass Block shot was a last-minute photo session result; posted as the best of what I’d taken on the venture (and not a long venture–maybe an hour.) I liked, but not overly so. The Amber Orb shot session was well over an hour in itself, focused exclusively on the bulb (and it’s brother, in some), and I picked my favorite (or 2nd favorite; jury’s still out) and thought it would be the run-away ‘hit’ of my 3 entries.

And of course…my “well I guess this is the best of what I can use” shot is competing with U-Man’s most excellent wine glass shot (!), and my personal favorite, while gaining ground, is my least voted upon entry.

Is Amazon selling the “Voters, for dummies” book yet? Because I need to read it to figure out why my instincts have been outsourced and why my own opinion on my entries is always so juxtaposed with the voters.

markie_farkie‘s church shot is the bomb. bucky, I voted for your wine glasses, too–in some contexts, I like them better (no offense, U-Man; you got a vote, too)(also BISS‘s glasses); orionid‘s carved glass shot is fantastic, and plamadude‘s 2 foot lens could be a Lady Gaga costume. A bunch of others, too.

Well, when you get it figured out, rav, please do share! ‘Cause that’s almost always the case with me, too – last minute quickies seem to do better than the hours-invested entries.

And for those going to the Fark LV party – if you want your own shot of the stained glass ceiling dome that’s my first entry, it’s somewhere near the Paris casino, I think in the walkway between Bally’s and Paris.

Well, whatever it is that you guys have, it’s not something that I have as well. Either that, or my shots don’t resonate with the voters at all. I think this will be the last time I have my husband help me pick my shots. He really liked the candles one, and that’s doing the worst. Then again, I haven’t exactly picked too well either. Next week I get to try all over again though, and I do look forward to doing so. At least I haven’t given up, and at least my shots have votes, so someone liked them.

Els, there’s a guy with five votable (and voted on) entries in the thread – Prophetica Insipia. QueenBee called him out in the thread but he hasn’t responded.

I knew Chihuly would be a popular subject, he has so many interesting pieces! Some are way too busy for my taste, but he does have amazing vision.

I knew there would be a lot of Chihuly this time around… so I didn’t enter any of mine.

Nice shots, Caradoc! Did you enter any of them into the contest that they ran? I can’t remember now if it was AZ Highways or who…

NO NO NO godaddy business! Not after the video showing the CEO killing an elephant. What a jerk that guy is:

    http://www.ibtimes.com/articles/129331/20110331/namecheap-godaddy-elephants.htm

“Bob Parsons, the CEO of GoDaddy.com (a major Internet domain-hosting company), has killed at least one elephant and a leopard for his personal enjoyment? It has been well established that elephants are capable of experiencing emotions, including joy, anger, grief, and sympathy? Killing a single elephant can devastate a family, and their mourning ritual over the death of a family member rivals any that we humans have developed.?

Namecheap also denounced Parsons and GoDaddy. It said:

?It?s not often that we would disagree publicly with a competitor, but we at Namecheap are very disturbed by this video of a competitor killing an elephant for sport.?

Namecheap is now offering to transfer domain from GoDaddy to Namecheap at a price so cheap that Namecheap loses money on those transactions. In addition, it will donate $1 for every transfer to Save The Elephants (www.savetheelephants.org).

Namecheap?s special offer is good until 11:59pm EST of April 1st. The coupon code for the offer is BYEBYEGD (bye bye GoDaddy).”

And stupid Flickr also changed the ‘grab the link’ prompts again, which confuzzled my old brain.

Definitely none taken. I consider it a ‘great minds think alike’ thing. 🙂

I was running through the entries last night when my 4-year-old walked up behind me. She said, “Ooooo. I like that pink one Daddy” in reference to your glass blocks. She then spouted off several beautiful childish comments about the pic. I wanted to record them but didn’t, and now they are completely lost. They were good though! And cute.
