A ruling, clarification, whatever you call it.
Let’s say a theme allowed panoramics. Are each and all pictures in said panoramic thus barred (or barred for any length of time) from being used, alone as an entry.
And the converse. If a picture has been a previous entry, but a theme allowing pano’s came about in which the picture could be composed withof, is that barred?
//not that it’s germane to the contest or anything. But it came to mind while contemplating it.
April 30, 2011 at 5:52 pm #13657FarktographerParticipantI’d say it’d be barred from being used in a future contest. It’d be the same idea with cropping a picture you’ve already used, right? A crop doesn’t make it a new photograph, IMO.
April 30, 2011 at 7:10 pm #13656KestranaParticipantI think this issue has come up before and the consensus then was its not just “picture” but “frame #”. Thus you can’t recrop, recolor, stich, unstich, layer or unlayer a photo to call it new if it was used previously, no matter the context.
Using 2 different frames of the “same picture” is legal however.
May 1, 2011 at 12:02 am #13655ElsinoreKeymasterYep this^^. It’s the exposure/frame. Taking several frames/exposures of the exact same composition probably violates the spirit of the rules to some degree, but we’ve always just gone with the actual frame/exposure.
May 2, 2011 at 8:40 pm #13570CuriousParticipantgot some cloud shots driving home. and i’m looking at them with the windows picture viewer and thinking about how to tweak them for better appearance. now my new setup is dual monitor so i grab the window and drag it onto the other monitor. damn i sure need to get these calibrated to match each other. but it reminded me that no matter what i do i have no control over the voters monitor. so i may not too much time trying to make the entries “perfect”.

I have two monitors as well. I calibrated one a while back. I just haven’t gotten ’round to doing the other. Sometimes I try to make a photo optimal between the two settings. 🙂
May 3, 2011 at 3:20 am #13567justkatParticipantI’d like a ruling on a pic. My thought behind using it is that the motorcyclist appears to be driving on the cloud… but maybe it’s not “cloudy” enough? I’d like to know before I deal with the unholy amount of dust on the shot…. 😉

I would think that those would be pretty much spot-on target photos for the theme.
May 3, 2011 at 7:31 am #13563Plamadude30kParticipantjustkat, I love that photo, but I think the primary focus is definitely the rider and not the clouds, which seem almost incidental to the photo. Sorry. At least you can save it for some other contest, though.
CauseISaidSo, I think those are okay for the theme. Really nice crepuscular rays too.

I hear that; our skies have been cloud free for over a week (that I’ve seen), and I’m itching to find a third entry.
On another note–not a question of which picture to use, but of which way to render it. Here’s a snip-it of a photo I will be using, two versions. I’ve rendered it a few ways (curves, saturations, color temps, and white balancing), but can’t decide between more natural tones or using the white-balance eye dropper to make an eye-dropping color shift (almost dreamy, IMO).
I know white balancing is an acceptable adjustment, but is it going to far (keeping in mind LGT a ‘snipit’ of the whole photo)?
May 3, 2011 at 3:36 pm #13562U-ManParticipantI think the plane is the subject and the clouds are incidental.
May 3, 2011 at 3:41 pm #13555U-ManParticipantKidding. 🙂
I don’t have a strong preference between the two version.
