Elsinore, Mopsy was fighting with her computer (and losing 🙁 ) so I helped her out. Something odd was happening where she got an error message stating that her username or password was incorrect — but she was already logged into totalfark. I had her upload a re-named copy of the photo to our image host and it worked fine. I think something got confused, thinking she was doing a double post. But it’s all OK now.

However, she labelled her 2011-05-18 08:16:25 PM post incorrectly as “AIR”. It is now re-posted as “EARTH”. Would you please delete the initial post?

    Thanks.

Ya know, it could be some under-the-hood stuff they’re doing on Fark fubar’d things while Mopsy was posting. I’m hoping that’s all it is; I didn’t find anything amiss with her account (though my powers there are limited). And to be clear–you’re asking me to delete 2011-05-18 08:16:25 PM, correct?

That’s correct Elsinore. Also, do you have the “Welcome to Farktography info” showing up in the middle of the entries. My computer shows it at the beginning and again about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way into the contest.

Ok your 2011-05-18 08:16:25 PM is deleted. The second “Welcome to Farktography” post should be at the top of the thread now (there was a mistake in the first one). You might need to refresh your browser, but it shows as fixed on mine.

I really, really like the feel of these two blowing-the-dandelion pics. In the end, I went with the smoke because it has more immediate appeal for the fark crowd. I’ll be doing more versions of these over the summer.

Side note – my 9 year old friggin’ can’t blow a dandelion! I mean, it is, like 5 inches from her face and she just misses with the wind. She totally stinks at it! Me being me, I actually was getting mad at her because I had this perfect setting-sun back-lit scene and she was incapable of doing her part. Well, we were at a local church two evenings ago – looking for more poof ball dandelions. She couldn’t blow and I was getting irritated. That is, until we came upon these two memorial stones near a little pond. They were in memory of two girls, a 16 yr old and a 17 yr old. They died on the same day. I presume it was a car accident. I looked at those stones for a few minutes. Then I looked at two of my beautiful, healthy girls playing. Then I told myself to get my shit straight and enjoy my life and my family today because tomorrow is no guarantee. (I might post a version of this over on Facebook. Might not.)

Can’t wait to see the contest; the sneak previews I’ve seen on here and flickr look good–U-man that first fire B and the last dandelion B are awesome.
I wish I could’ve done all four elements, but fire is out. The “best” idea I had? Learning how to breathe fire and get a good self-portrait of it … maybe next time.

Yay! My first theme suggestion went live on my 1-year farktography anniversary.

I was actually 30,000 feet over somewhere likely in Iowa when the contest went live. How then did I post my entries? I modified my stats scraper to auto-post. No more OBOs for me! 🙂

I really was looking for more dramatic flames in my fire shot, but I set off the smoke alarm twice and was then instructed that that would have to be good enough.

My bees (one for each element) are here.

No, not my voting stats! 😯 Youse guys really do have ways of making me talk, eh? I’m more than happy to share, I just didn’t want to bore anyone with technical talk if they weren’t interested.

It’s basically emulating a web browser. The way my stats scraper works is that at the contest start time, it polls the main page to look for a new contest so that it knows the link to the contest comments page. It does that by parsing the HTML sent from the web server and looking for specific attributes that indicate a farktography contest.

Once it knows the comments page link, it polls the comments and the voting results pages every 15 minutes. If you pull up the main page, the contest page, or the voting results page and choose View Source on your browser, you’ll see exactly what I’m parsing to figure out the links, who posted what, and how many votes were cast.

Embedded in the comments page HTML is the form that contains the comment posting section. So when I found out last week that I’d be inflight during this week’s contest, and faced with having to request a back-to-back OBO, I decided to add code to the parser so that I could provide it with the comments that I’d normally post myself and then when it finds that the contest has gone live, it pulls the comments page, fills in the appropriate fields, and then posts it back, just as if I’d done it myself from within a browser. It waits a minute and then repeats for the next entry until done.

I plan to eventually make this a feature on my stats site so that any registered user can setup an OBO on his/her own behalf. And I swear the site is still in development, I just severely underestimated my free time over the past few months. I’ve even got a domain for it: BiblioStats.com (meant to imply “statistics library”, from the Spanish biblioteca or French biblioth?que).
