ParticipantLast weekend I was chasing itty bitty spiders around the campground with my 70-200 and a couple of tubes on them. I found out the hard way that shooting little spiders on moving webs really really kicked up my vertigo! Eyes strain, dizzy and sick to my stomach for the rest of the day!
What I do for my art!! 🙂June 3, 2010 at 1:10 am #27642U-Man
ParticipantAaaaaaaack. The Blackhawks are coming back on and I can’t decide on #3!

ParticipantHey. I have DVR. Duh.
The two I posted I shot this week. I’m still debating with myself on #3.

ParticipantNot to compare myself to U-Man (or anyone else for that matter) but I shot mine with a Sigma 70-300mm lens that I bought for $99 on Ebay. Just flipped the switch to Macro and shot the ISO way up and went for it. I’m going to get myself a Canon EF 100mm Macro soon, but I don’t think I could’ve done better with it on. Don’t sell yourself short, all the gear in the world doesn’t replace a good eye, and you’ve got one.
Don’t be afraid to look at that Sigma 50mm/F2.8 macro too. It does a really good job at the macro stuff, and you might find it more generally useful, especially if you don’t have a prime in that area. We got to play with the Canon 100mm before we bought Kat’s, and I think she’s happier having gotten the 50.
/ideally, I’d like to have both 😉
I am, BTW, moderately proud of my butterfly. Whatever the vote total may say! 😀
I haven’t been doing so well lately, so I can’t even begin to call mine 😛 But I like your 8:01

ParticipantI posted a baby mantis?
Edited to add: It’s a just-kat post in my viewing of the thread.
Ok clearly I need more alcohol..I swear on all that is holy that said it was an orionid post before!

Belly of the BeastBTW: Thanks, all (myself included). I’m going to be sleeping with a can of Raid for weeks now.

ParticipantI am a habitual taker of bug pictures so I can’t even call these b-sides, but these are a few more spiders-preparing-dinner shots:

ParticipantPer usual, I am in awe of the farktographers! Some of the pictures are nightmare fuel but lovely nonetheless.
You’ve convinced me that I need a decent macro lens or at the very least extension tubes so I can take decent macro shots.

I wouldn’t mind having two macro lenses. But a second macro lens is not high on the list of new glass we’d like. I chose a 50mm because I thought it was a little more versatile than a 100mm, but I have to admit that the 100mm I borrowed while I was making up my mind had qualities my 50 doesn’t have.
/gotta win that lottery…

ParticipantI’ll play – I opted for the mantis over this one, partially because I just didn’t want to post two spiders. The other problem is that it’s impossible to get a sense of scale from the shot. This spider is walking on the side of a three-cell Maglight.

And the uncropped version.

ParticipantI heart this contest so much.

ParticipantI figured there would be a lot of ladybugs, so I didn’t go with this one. I swear I could have come up with 20 pix for this contest

KeymasterUm, hey guys? Could we get some link votes on the thread? My single vote looks kinda forlorn there…
June 3, 2010 at 3:33 am #27654olavf
ParticipantSorry 🙁 I never think of it.

ParticipantJustkat, thanks. 🙂 I think you were referring to photography and not photography equipment. I like having good stuff but I would still have fun shooting off-brand ebay finds.
Some of my better farktography shots were taken with a point and shoot –

http://photos.imageevent.com/ulle17/fark/Tree-Slope_1672.jpgfwiw – I have the Canon 100 mm macro and am happy with it. I’ve used it for some portrait stuff and like it for that, too.
