ParticipantIn my mind, desaturating by 50%, either across the entire photo or on a single color channel isn’t really “limited” saturation reduction.
I agree.

ParticipantSince a lot of people are reading this thread I just wanted to mention off topicly that we’ve made some progress towards being able to publish a farktography book and if you haven’t checked out the thread in the Projects forum, I’d invite you to do so. You really only need to read pg. 8 onward.

ParticipantHoly shiat, did you ever… 🙂
I’m at work so I only glanced at it. I’ll give it a better read tonight.
Let me share some quick thoughts though. These contests are for fun and growth and the pleasure of sharing with a community. In my experience, blending all of that with my friendly, competitive attitude and the various personalities here is imperfect. While it is an overall great experience, it has flaws.
One common issue is defining clear and fair boundries so we can compete. Discontent occurs when the rules are unfair or fuzzy. I’m still kinda bothered about the ‘Rain’ theme. I’d bet some serious cash that some of last week’s better photos were not taken by passengers. But that’s small stuff. The value I get from being here far outweighs the minor problems.
Damn. I need to work. Let me wrap up by just saying that, in my opinion, the rules for this theme would be more fair if desaturation was kept to a minimum. I can’t define that minimum right now.
Can somebody quantify it? Maybe by percentile?

ParticipantSpeaking of fun and growth, U-Man, is it true that I can legally buy and own up to 10 hypodermic syringes without a prescription in IL or being hassled by the pharmacist?

I agree, though defining an exact percentage would probably be harder (and kind of fussier) than just saying “no desaturation”. As the theme suggester Kestrana can clarify further, but my understanding of this theme was that your subject itself should be pretty monochromatic and thus not require desaturation. I could probably take a photo of a fairly colorful scene or subject and knock the saturation down just 25%-50% and make it look like it “fits” but I don’t think that’s in the spirit of this theme. Yes, desaturation is otherwise allowed in Farktography rules, but I think the point of this particular theme is that you choose subjects or scenes that already look desaturated. If you have to desaturate in post-processing, that’s kind of defeating the point…
/my 2 cents

orionidParticipantAll of my entries are sans desaturation, so it is possible, albeit challenging. I’d lean towards minimization of desaturation for this one.

KeymasterBut again, where do we draw the line? Is 10% too much or plenty? 15%? 20%? 25%? Should we quibble over percentage points? I only have two entries in mind, but neither required desaturation. For me the challenge of this theme is specifically in shooting something that would appear like a black and white photo without manipulation to make it appear so.

ParticipantY’know what? My input is to just avoid this conflict and fuzziness of the rules by just stating “No post-processing desauturation is allowed for this week’s theme”.
But y’know what else? I won’t cry or gnash my teeth if it is allowed.
/probably the first time I hsve typer the word “gnash”.

I’m inclined to agree, though it pains me as I really like one of the shot’s I’d use otherwise (but there will be other contests where I can use it, surely.)
While it affects my choices, I do have shots that will suffice nicely with only color temperature/contrast/etc adjustments. I’ll just use those, if it so be.

Participantalso the first times I have used the words hsve and typer.

I once used it to describe a 1960 Nash Rambler with the top chopped off and replaced with Toyota Celica A-pillars and roof. It actually looked really sweet. Want.

ParticipantI understood the theme to be a photo that looks B&W but isn’t. Desaturating the shot does not fit IMHO.

Participant“g-nash” was also the sound the Smurfs made in that episode where they were all running around and biting each other on the butts and turning purple…
I’m along the same lines though – simply desaturating a shot isn’t really what this contest is about – though the 5% or so I can get with DPP wouldn’t make much of a difference.
FWIW, I’ll likely just have two again this week, unless I get inspired, but the most I can say is that I went with what the camera decided the white balance should be for one of them =P

Participant“Difficulty: No desaturation allowed” can be added to the t&d although between you and me if it’s 5% or less I’m not going to beat you about the head with the pointy end of a hedgehog or anything
