KeymasterI think that’s fair.

ParticipantIf it’s 5% or so, then they’ve put the effort into getting the shot anyway IMO.
I just grabbed a couple of fairly monochromatic shots and tried. They all would have been no-gos (blue sky is still blueish, more intense colors pop, etc). Truth be told, it would only work on a shot that was already there, just needed an extra ‘kick’.
But, someone grabbing a random pic and desaturating it in PS or Gimp should be pretty obvious.

Participant5% or less seems fair to me. Having been out and taken quite a lot of shots for this, I can say you can get pictures that fit the theme without having to desaturate.
Whether they are any good or not, well now that’s different question entirely.
Example:

Participant“Oops! You don’t have permission to view this photo.”
Secret photos are sadly not the theme this week. 😉
And yes, the point of the theme was to find a monochromatic subject matter and major desaturation should not be necessary, because your picture would look unrealistic.

ParticipantBallocks. I thought I had it. Flickr seems to have changed. Not sure how to post the picture directly in the thread.
Anyway, it was all black and white, trust me 😆July 13, 2010 at 6:32 pm #29774CauseISaidSo
ParticipantHello all. As this is my boobies, let me first say that I really enjoy all of your shots every week.
As a relative newcomer (although long-time Fark lurker) my opinion may not matter for much, but I’d like to throw my 2 cents in with the “stricter interpretation of the rules” crowd. For example, on last weeks theme I was a little disappointed to see it open up to non-wheeled public transportion, even though that opened the door for my best performing shot of the theme. I thought it diluted the theme a bit.
Anyway, please don’t interpret that as criticism of anybody, it’s just my opinion. 🙂

ParticipantI find that I am unable to contribute this week, for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, being colorblind I have a hard time making a distinction about such things as what constitutes black & white and ‘could be mistaken for black and white”.
Related to the item above: when I find a shot I think looks like it might work I quickly convert it to b&W. If it looks starkly different, I reject it. This basically applies to every photo I’ve looked at on my computer.
Finally, I also think that 50% desaturation seems like a bad idea.
I struggle with these color-related themes the most but I look forward to seeing what you folks come up with.

R-G or Y-B? Can’t you have someone view your possibilities and help with that? For that matter, the unique perspective of color-blindness would be interesting to see in the gallery here…I’d enjoy seeing what you view as b/w, as I’ve never had the opportunity to compare what you see vs. what the ‘rest of us’ perceive. I would find that educationally enlightening (I am a geek and thus enjoy such experiences).
The saturation question has been answered in the revised description, so that’s now a mute point. I hope.

ParticipantWelcome CauselSaidSo. It’s nice to have new folks show up. FWIW, I agree with your opinion about last week. But I wouldn’t agree with a stricter interpretation the week before. 🙂
andyofne, I’m red-green color…ummm…deficient. I can tell a stop sign is red. I know grass is green. But it doesn’t ‘pop’. I don’t notice or enjoy colors as much as others. I might notice and enjoy differences in intensity/brightness more, though. I can’t tell which is the red one and which is the green on when doing electrical work. My wife pointed at a dead, brown pine tree in a forest and I could not tell which one was different. It’s weird.
Anyway, I had my wife help this week. She nixed a foggy tree one for too much color.

ParticipantWell, I’m not going to make a big deal about colorblindness but suffice to say I can only ever read the first number in the circle. The rest of them, forget about it.
It’s not a big deal but I thought I’d try this week and was a little sad when I started paging through my photos and couldn’t really find anything that would work.
I’m trying to keep my eye on the contests but I’m a horrible procrastinator and always wait until the last minute. 🙁

ParticipantThanks for the welcome, guys. U-Man, I had a hunch you might’ve preferred a more relaxed interpretation for that contest. 🙂
Actually, even preferring a stricter interpretation, I was OK with your shot. Kinda like needing to open last week’s contest to the city folk without cars, allowing man-made rain opened it to those of you with the time and creativity to take shots specifically for the contest even if your local weather wasn’t cooperating. (Not to mention it was a really creative shot and would’ve been a shame to have been excluded.)
I guess in the end it’s (rightfully) up to the theme author as to how specific a theme should be. I’m just stating that it’s OK by me to be specific, even if it means I have to skip a contest here and there.

ParticipantWow! Lots of discussion on this theme. Just for the record none of mine have been desaturated. What I was going to suggest for another theme is the same black, white, grey idea with just one colored item, much like the red umbrella pic or like the color popping theme but done naturally. I need some guidance to suggest this on the new theme idea thread. Everytime I try to enter a suggestion it goes off into a Fark Black Hole. When I first became a member, I was able to give suggestions, but have somehow lost the ability to do it right. So HELPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP someone give me the step-by-step.

ParticipantMopsy, to post a theme suggestion (or this is how I did it, anyway) :
1) At the top of this page, click the Farktography.net Forum Index link.
2) Click the Themes link under the “Farktography general chat” section
3) Click the new topic button at the top of the page
4) Enter the name of your theme in the Subject box and give a little description of it in the Message body box.
5) Click the Preview button at the bottom of the blue section of the page.
6) Review to see that it looks OK, then click the Submit button.Hope that helps.
