I’m really interested in how this will turn out. I feel like it will be pretty abstract in general.

It will be interesting to see what people enter. The only off-topic stuff would be, well, normal photo subjects like people and landscapes. Don’t you think? Elsinore, do you have any pre-contest moderator advice? Should we add another sentence to that unwieldy description to discourage ‘regular’ stuff?

    /very subjective, I know.

Sorry I’m just now getting back to you. Long holiday weekend has me throwm off my schedule.

And yeah, definitely subjective. This theme reminds me of that old Supreme Court ruling where the justice said he couldn’t define porn, but he knew it when he saw it. It will be really difficult to define “regular” stuff since that will be in the eye of the beholder, though some stuff will almost certainly jump out at us as something only someone with a photographer’s eye would take photos of.

I do like Kestrana’s “Photograph “unseen interestingness” – the odd and strange things only photographers see” line, and that might define it a bit for those who aren’t sure what kinds of things you’re getting at. The piece about “found” photos versus “made-up” photos might be harder to put out there at this point. Think of a subject where you see something interesting about it, but wanted to light it in a certain way or arrange it in a certain way because you liked the pattern or play of shadows or something. In that case, it’s something a non-photographer wouldn’t take a photo of, though it might require a bit of set up that I’d see as fair game (though it isn’t my theme, so if you were bitterly opposed to that kind of thing, I’d consider it. I just don’t want to rule out too much this late in the game when people may have already taken their photos).

Sooo yeah, not sure if I’m helping at all. I think ultimately I won’t have much justification to DQ any entries with such an open ended theme, but if anything from this thread can help narrow things down for people, I’m all for adding something to the description (or taking something away) per your direction, U-Man.

I would kinda see an argument for both of those, olavf

    I’m guessing something like this

    http://65.78.140.207/gallery2/main.php/v/olav_art/brick_wall_5871_sm.JPG.html

    is right out, and this

    http://65.78.140.207/gallery2/main.php/v/olav_art/spitoon-5817_sm.JPG.html

    is iffy?

Not my call of course, but I would think the 2nd one would fit. “Most people” wouldn’t normally photograph that. I think the first one is more of the “common subject shot in a different way” that U-Man was ruling out earlier. But again – not my call.

I was considering this one –

I can too – I think they’re examples of the sorts of vignettes I see every day whether I have a camera in hand or not, that I don’t think most people see, but at the same time, reading the comments I get the feeling they’re fairly loose interpretations – especially the brick wall.

    I suspect you’re right there.

That’s too funny. I like it, I really do. And it makes me glad I’d nixed this one 😉

olavf, I wouldn’t DQ either of those. I think the second one fits the spirit of the theme better. However, the first one is more pleasing to me. It would be interesting to see which received more votes. I have a feeling the legs-and-bricks would come out ahead even though it doesn’t fit as well.

bucky bacon, the stairs fit fine.

As stated before, a test for “fit” could be questions like — Would my non-photographer friends think about taking this pic? Would they notice how beautiful/striking/emotive/etc this atypical subject is? Hell, would they even see it? Can I show this “hidden” part of the world to them?

I’ve already admitted that I don’t have firm mental boundaries for this theme. I’m just as curious as you guys are on how it will turn out. 🙂 My guess is that I will enjoy it. But if it flops, no biggie. There’s always next week.

With all this discussion, I keep thinking more and more photos will fit. I think I’ll stick with what I’ve got on the roulette wheel already. I’ll have an anny ur izzm if I add any more choices. 😉

(In truth, I think only one will be a contender, but then you really never can tell with these contests.)

You really can’t tell about the voting. This one is more about stretching the borders for me. Some weeks I really want a pic to do well (OK…most weeks. 🙂 ) This week is more of an “I Like It Anyway” theme for me. Doing well with a pic will just be frosting on the cake.

I guess that’s the thing that’s been giving me fits U-man. I don’t *think* the average person would see the girl against the brick wall, and think, “I want that picture” until they saw it as a picture… Yet I think the spittoon is more along the lines of what you were thinking when you submitted. And then there’s other stuff like the shot I took of a bug eating a yellowjacket – which as a picture probably wouldn’t work without the back-story of how I was standing in a field taking a picture into a tree, and getting a total WTF? look from this family until I called their kids over to see what I was looking at. But I don’t like posting pics that need a back-story to fit the theme.

Like the time I climbed a gantry to take a shot of a bunch of Hell’s Angels posing in front of a B-52.

The camera *really* made me do it, and in retrospect I probably could have gotten my ass kicked. but I *needed* the shot.

So, like you, I may have to just drop ten and punt
    (that’s the correct term, right?)

Do you think this fits the theme?

I have at least one I know fits the theme for sure because somebody asked me why I was taking pictures of it.

I’d say that’s a “definitely”, lokisbong. And a pretty cool shot, to boot.

    loki’ – yep. fits.

Here’s an example of mine. I don’t know if I will use it. But it may be instructive.

Shortly before taking this pic (which non-photographers might imagine taking themselves)…

    http://photos.imageevent.com/ulle17/fark/Alma_7539.jpg

…I took this pic (which even I sort of look sideways at myself for taking 🙂 )

    http://photos.imageevent.com/ulle17/fark/Fishing-Shed_7503.jpg

It was inside an old crummy fishing shed. 10 or 11 PM. I was nosing around, saw the lures and old, forgotten glasses, the old leaf. It looked neat to me. I took 20 or so pics.

I agree the second picture is a neat picture U-man. and thanks for the positive comments olavf and U-man. I thought it fit the theme but wasn’t 100% sure.

I like the glasses. That definitely adds a touch.
