ParticipantI weighted that so heavily that I got a 2-year-old body (Canon 5D) instead of one of the newer, cropped-sensor models
Why?
Analogy
ParticipantLenses and lighting will make a far greater difference to your photography than a new body will. Take what you’d spend on a 5D and buy some L glass and a couple strobes. Unless you’re making money at this, you don’t need anything fancier than your 20D.

ParticipantIn the manual modes the AF points are individually selectable. Look up AF point selection in your user manual.

Participant“Event” is very unspecific and can refer to practically anything.
1) Wear what everybody else is wearing.
2) My method is to just mingle naturally with the crowd, making picturetaking almost an afterthought. If people are comfortable with your presence and you don’t make the photography too intrusive you get more natural and higher quality candid shots.
I don’t bother asking permission for a shot because calling attention to yourself makes people pose for the camera. I’m all about natural, candid, spontaneous shots in event photography and those just don’t happen when people are aware that there’s a camera pointed at them. If you need permission or caption details, get them after the shot. If they tell you not to use it, just delete it off your camera and move on. In general, however, if they’re at the kind of event that has photographers present they probably won’t have a problem with it. Of course, it depends on the event.

ParticipantNiice. Who is it?

ParticipantI’d say unless the powers that be have a problem with it, keep it as is. If Big D says something about it, we can consider changing things.

ParticipantThis is the downside of people who measure image quality in file size with no other qualifier.

ParticipantI ended up buying an EOS XT, the kit lens, the 70-200mm lens, and the f/1.8 50mm lens.
I’m guessing it’s the 70-200 f/4 without IS?

Participant“We” are the team physicians for them. Not me personally, I do the IT work around here. Are you going to be in town long enough to grab a beer or anything?
I’m flying in morning of the 25th and out the night of the 26th. The work itself should just be a couple hours on the 25th, after which I’m totally free. I’m actually already planning on meeting up with a friend of mine but you’re welcome to join in.

ParticipantAre you coming out to meet up with the cattle drive from Texas?
Not quite, installing some webcasting hardware for the arena football team that plays there.

ParticipantWhereabouts in Nebraska? I’m going to Omaha on business on the 25th.

Participantthat is nifty
BUT it doesn’t have a linux option. oh well. as much as i’m enjoying trying to convert to open source and Ubuntu it does have drawbacks.
I treated OSS as a religion for a while myself, but after a while I realized it’s all about what’s best for your needs, not what software philosophy you adhere to. In a lot of cases, OSS is best for your needs, especially when it comes to very common applications such as web browsing and IM. However, there are also many applications where closed-source software is the best, especially when it comes down to getting actual work done. Whether an app is open or closed source makes no difference in the real world unless you’re a programmer yourself. What matters is the functionality of the software itself.
I use Windows because I’m a gamer. Constantly rebooting between OSs is counterproductive. If I need Linux-like functionality, I use Cygwin which creates a Linux-like environment under Windows. Otherwise, the vast majority of OSS applications are available for Windows anyway.

ParticipantI won’t believe it until I see a rebate check. These sorts of things are notorious for doing everything in their power to keep you from collecting your rebate. It’s practically a scam.
