Yeah, I was abusing my F5 key as well, but I know that mods are only human, so I had to settle for chewing my fingernails…. up to my elbows. 😛

This week ended up being a lot harder for me than I thought when it was proposed originally. So all I have to say about my submissions is: I had a hell of a lot of fun setting up that barbie judging shot. It made me giggle, I don’t care about the votes (unless there a a gazillion of them, in which case, I’ll think that’s mighty fine.)

If I could just make one sleepy comment.

It is rarely appropriate to use auto-focus in macro photography. It is slow, uses up battery, and worst of all, as has already been mentioned, tends to focus on something other than what you wanted it to. I pretty much only use it if my subject fills up my frame fairly completely and isn’t moving. 😉 Other than that, it’s manual focus all the way. Tremendously less frustrating. I’ve found the easiest way to shoot moving targets or targets at the closest range the equipment is built for is to focus it as close as possible and then move me. I’ve found this this technique is great for plants moving in the breeze (although in that case I wait for the breeze to blow the plant into focus rather than moving myself) and that sort of thing.

Really, autofocus+macro=years off your life. 😉

I generally don’t limit my voting either, but with as many good pics as there are this week, I’da been all day voting for them all.

I think I just voted for you, justkat. I likes. The problem is with SO many good pictures, I’d nearly want to vote for all of them. I tried to limit my voting to one of each type insect, and one per person. I failed at this, but that was the goal going in.

I don’t limit my voting like that. In general I vote by 1) does the picture fit the theme correctly? 2) Is it technically good? 3) Do I just plain like it? And for bonus points: 4) Is it clever in some way?

Generally a picture has to have the first three elements to get my vote, but sometimes if it has an abundance of, say, 2 or 3 or sometimes even 4 it may make up for a deficiency in 2 or 3. I almost never vote for something that is off theme as I interpret the theme.

All that said, if the right elements are there, I vote freely. It’s totally okay with me to vote for 50 pictures. 😀 I wouldn’t be surprised if I voted for that many or more this week; this contest is relevant to my interests to say the least.

But if you threw a vote my way, thank you!! 😀

U-Man – I tried to make myself clear and obviously failed. I meant type of photography not equipment. I’ve taken some great macro stuff with my p&s too. The pic I posted non-voting in the thread was a p&s pic, likewise the black widow I used in Anniversary IV (which didn’t place well, but still is a good spider picture =P ). So yeah, you rock and you more or less admitted it. heehee

Per usual, I am in awe of the farktographers! Some of the pictures are nightmare fuel but lovely nonetheless.

You’ve convinced me that I need a decent macro lens or at the very least extension tubes so I can take decent macro shots.

I wouldn’t mind having two macro lenses. But a second macro lens is not high on the list of new glass we’d like. I chose a 50mm because I thought it was a little more versatile than a 100mm, but I have to admit that the 100mm I borrowed while I was making up my mind had qualities my 50 doesn’t have.

/gotta win that lottery…
