I would definitely use this one.
March 18, 2012 – Doris by El_Pickerel, on FlickrOctober 23, 2012 at 11:40 pm #48863PickerelParticipantSo I’m terrible at this, but there doesn’t seem to be much traffic here and I don’t want to flood with stuff. Here’s some B&W prints I have done in my class. We’ve only started spotting, so I will probably touch up some of these. I bought an F5 just for this class, because I wanted to be able to use all my newest lenses that have vibration reduction and no aperture ring, and have a 100% viewfinder.

September 18, 2012 at 3:43 am #48862PickerelParticipantHaven’t touched this in a while, so here’s an abstract thing. White balance, saturation and luminance extensively tinkered with in Lightroom.

Because I’m so far behind (getting better!) here’s a shot from my first day with the 85mm f/1.8G

August 30, 2012 at 9:10 pm #48939PickerelParticipantDon’t think of it as just a macro lens. Think of it as a pretty-damned-sharp lens…
Problem is… I usually have my 70-200mm f/2.8 VR with me while hiking. Makes it very hard to justify a 1:1 macro, since I’ll only put it on for those shots where I have to go beyond 1:4 reproduction. Nikon patented a 70-200mm f/4 VR that has 1:2 reproduction… I really hope they make that, since I would definely swap that with the f/2.8 for the 1:2 capability.

August 29, 2012 at 2:15 am #48936PickerelParticipantOne time while I was backpacking, a grasshopper roughly 5″ long decided to jump up and hitch a ride on my knuckle. It also decided to try eating my knuckle. While watching this ginormous grasshopper trying to nom on my hand, I realized just how complicated they are! Could see all the parts at work clearly. Unfortunately this was the trip before I had my BlackRapid strap, so my camera was not on hand to try capturing the site. After that episode, and another instance where a teeny tiny salamander fell on my head, I really got the thought in my head to bring a macro lens + speedlight while hiking. Wish I could justify it… so few shots I’d use a macro for, but I need it for those shots.
Here’s the teeny tiny salamander, shot with an ultrawide zoom and heavily cropped…
Redback Salamander by El_Pickerel, on FlickrAugust 29, 2012 at 2:01 am #48861PickerelParticipantI like the parallelism (is that even a word?) in the second… the first one really messed up my sense of perspective, which just made me look at it even more.
Want a messed up sense of perspective? Try taking photos while balanced on a log! Perspective seen through viewfinder or LCD not matching what gravity is telling you + being pretty far off the ground on a narrow thing = yikes!
Man, I wish I was from Portland, Oregon. It was fun yesterday back to college for the first day. Me at a community college, oh goodness what contrast! I could have just time-traveled from a college campus in the 70s, to what things look like today at a suburban community college. And I don’t mind the difference in the least. I’m me and stuff!
Today’s shot is courtesy of French Creek State Park and Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site, two parks adjacent to each other in Pennsylvania.

And here’s a photo from a dance later that day… some motion blur on account of the terrible lighting and me already pushing my camera pretty far, but hooray for twirly skirts!

Last shot I’ll put on this post – friend being bizarre at a diner post-dance. Wish I had a shot from that one time we walked into the diner with someone on my back, playing a ukelele, but there was someone on my back, playing a ukelele…

August 22, 2012 at 2:43 am #48857PickerelParticipantOkay, maybe I will not do this daily since that will feel spam-ish. Or I’ll just edit new photos onto existing posts so there’s a few in each post. Anywho, here’s one for today. Pretty appropriate for fark, what with the dominating streetlight. I stopped at the Bennington Battle Monument on my way home from a dance weekend in Greenfield, MA and Brattleboro, VT in May. Didn’t wind up spending time there since my passengers just wanted to go home, but as I walked back to the truck I noticed the streetlight lining up with the monument and making for a (probably) unique perspective. And a pretty appropriate one for fark, what with the streetlight emphasis and stuff. 😛

August 15, 2012 at 11:14 am #44151PickerelParticipantThere is no real traditional garb to this… it is American folk dancing, originating from English country dancing in the 1700s and 1800s. It was on the decline for a while, but experienced a revival 30 or so years ago and while still a small community, it is a vibrant and dedicated one. At least that is the case where I have gone.
August 15, 2012 at 2:58 am #48805PickerelParticipantSo you picked up the 8-15 eh? Such a curious little (okay maybe not little) lens, but the versatility of circular and regular fisheye in one lens is pretty cool. Fisheye complements the curves in “The Bean” very well.
August 15, 2012 at 2:39 am #44149PickerelParticipantA couple new shots, from a dance weekend at the end of May. I am so far behind on my processing… Greenfield, MA. Guiding Star Grange, a dance hall legendary in the contra dance community. The lighting was great here early in the day, too.

February 28, 2012 at 11:13 pm #45177PickerelParticipantUsing old lenses can be fun. I have an AI-modified 50-300mm f/4.5 that’s much older than I am. It definitely doesn’t take photos that are sharp and contrasty, but it certainly has its look and it is fun and challenging to use this lens.
_DSD9170 by El_Pickerel, on FlickrFebruary 28, 2012 at 11:07 pm #41510PickerelParticipantNice thing about having Nikon… I have two old film bodies I got from various peoples (an EL2 and an FG) and I can use them with any lens that has an aperture ring. Keep them loaded with two kinds of film, and sometimes bring them with me. Once I shoot the roll of colour film in the EL2 I’m going to put B&W film in that… the FG already has ISO 100 B&W film in it that I’ve been shooting a bit. Hope to start developing the stuff once I have some shot film to work with!
