ParticipantWow, sounds like a popular place! Slightly off topic, but are most parts of Toronto pretty safe? I used to spend a lot of time in the GTA for work but haven’t been there for several years. Around here the places with lots of graffiti aren’t generally places that are safe to explore, especially carrying a big old camera.
The city is very safe, with the exception of a few pockets. The places around here with good graffiti usually turn into local attractions. A lot of the artist now do commissioned pieces, as the mayor has started a ‘war on graffiti’, now they just call them murals…and get grants for them. Our mayor is a bit of an idiot.

ParticipantI went to one of my favourite places in the city to shoot yesterday for this contest (graffiti alley) and came a cross a rap video shoot, a fashion shoot, a band photo shoot (not the rap band), a TV/Movie shoot and a wedding photo shoot. I also had a few conversations with the ‘locals’ about the graffiti and how the neighbourhood has really gentrified in the last few years. All in all it was a fun day.

ParticipantQuestion: Can a Venetian canal that would be considered a back alley if it were paved be a back alley for purposes of this contest?
I got plenty of others if the answer is no.
My intention for the contest was car/truck access lanes. You can use the canal if you want and let the voters decide.
A back alley implies an urban setting…does laneway imply a rural setting?
Yes, rural laneways count.

ParticipantThere are a lot of ex-farkers that communicate through Facebook only now, they rarely visit the site (usually for the “EPIC” threads). Maybe we can focus on getting those people back participating/voting.
I’ve always been curious about that. When you really look at it, there are a LOT of regulars that no longer or very rarely participate. Have they just moved on? Is there something that drove them away, real-life stuff getting in the way, or has the allure of the contests just faded for them?
It’s a bit more than that. my wife used spend a lot of time on fark, she was a photoshopper and TFette, she indroduced me to fark. But now she communicates with her Fark friends soley through FB. There are lot of other people in the Tfark FB group that rarely visit Fark too. The ironic thing is my wife also organizes the Toronto Fark Party…
There was a shift in how things were run a while ago, something about parody threads in TFD, that drove a lot of people off because a few stupid and offensive people took over. (or that’s my take on it).
Maybe we can start to advertize (link, cross-post etc) the Farktography threads in the Fark related FB groups that we all belong to. In ther short term it might bring more voters and maybe some regulars will return or we may get some newbies. I’ll volunteer to start posting the threads for the TFark group starting this week.

ParticipantI’m glad I’m not the only one thinking about this.
I agree with both of you on this.
I think that Fark in general is not attracting new people, not just Farktography. There are a lot of ex-farkers that communicate through Facebook only now, they rarely visit the site (usually for the “EPIC” threads). Maybe we can focus on getting those people back participating/voting. There is a photo walk group in Toronto I go out with occasionally and I talk about Fark (and farktography), mostly I get the blank look and “I’ve never heard of it” response. It’s a shame because some of these people would like the challenge of it.
As for the themes maybe we could have regularly scheduled themes. Right now we always have a Halloween and Christmas contest, maybe a spring and summer contest could be added. That way people now it’s coming up and can participate, especially the casual ones.
I know my participation has been spotty recently, mostly due to odd shifts at work. But there have been a few themes that I’ve drawn a blank on (hell, I drew a blank on one of my own themes). Maybe a string of popular “classic” threads might help.
/the above is just random thoughts.

ParticipantBased on the particiaption rate (and the site being down for a week) can we redo this theme in a year or so?
I loved going out looking for shots. My wife, MIL and I drove around rural Quebec last weekend looking for abandon houses and such, we ended up in an adandoned aebestos mine in Asbestos, QC.

ParticipantI don’t care if it gets pushed back, I have the shots I’m going to use and I’m not likely to get a chance to get any more.
Pope_Larry_II
ParticipantOk, I have to out myself for re-posting a shot in this contest from an earlier one. The sunset shot was posted earlier in the Sun in Frame contest. The reason bibiliostats did not pick it up was that it was re-uploaded and renamed, I only found it by looking back through my archives.
I assume that it will be deleted from my stats, which I’m good with.
Pope_Larry_II
ParticipantI’m going to add my nickels worth in.
I think the point of posting the Photoshop Contest a week in advance was to give people tome to do their photoshoping. We have this forum for that. I’m not saying it’s a bad idea, but we have two different kinds of contests.
I can also see a potential for copycats, if I take a shot and post early, someone could try to make a better shot ofthe same idea. They way it is now, you have no real idea what anyone is doing until post time. It’s forces you to come up with your own ideas and it’s always a surprise to see what gets posted. I’d aslo like to avoid the ever popular PS tennis matches.
That being said, I’m for anything that increases participation in the Contests. I say we give it a try and see how it goes.

ParticipantI was more interested in the vitriol that spilled out from the ignorant masses castigating the photographer for “profiting” on this woman’s misery. This country is now so benightedly stupid it cannot fathom the role of the press, the ideals of journalistic credibility and editorial distance. The photographer did EXACTLY what she was supposed to do, document, report to the authorities and resume documenting. These photographs grind the horror of domestic violence and poverty in the face of America, reminding us of our failures when comes to treating people with decency and compassion. The shine a light on the darkness that dwells in the millions of American homes and all the cretinous masses can do is point their fingers at the messenger and catcall.
To quote an esteemed scientist, I don’t want to live on this planet any more.
There is a reason I never look at the comments section of an article. There are some incredible idiots out there or assholes who like to troll for kicks. At least with Fark you can identify them and ignore them.
I am constantly amazed at the people who are proud of their ignorance.
As for the worman in the article; I hope she can pull everything together and make a better life for herself and kids.

ParticipantYugo, I too am ridiculously happy to have the Jeep. It’s no cure for stupidity, of course (as the picture illustrates), but I’ve pulled many people out of drifts and banks the past 3 days with it and cleared more than my share of tracks through some of the smaller drifts for folks to use. Seems like every time I go out lately, I wind up breaking out the tow strap to pull someone back up onto smoother parts of the road (only had to do that once today on the way in to work).
You sir, deserve a Timmies Double Double and a pack of Tim Bits for your efforts.
