I need a ruling on this photo, is this green enough?

I’m not using this one, but rather another one from the same shoot, it’s very similar.

    Thanks all.

Curious, I like the kit so far, but really I have nothing to compare it to, it’s my first good camera. The only issue I have is that is I tend to switch the lenses frequently, I’m planning on buying a 18-200 lens when I can get the money together, just to avoid that problem. I haven’t shot much in low light, but what I have shot has been all over the map in terms of quality. I think it has to do more with me than the camera.

Orionid, I love the forking pics! I wish I could have voted for them twice.

On a side note, my rail line pic is set to be my highest finish yet. I didn’t think it was that good, I thought my other entry would do better. Oh well, ‘I may not know a lot about art but, I know what I like’

I think I know the answer, but can we have people in the picture? I only ask because it was my nieces first birthday yesterday and I have a lot of good photos of her eating cake, or trying to.

For my voting it, came down to context. I felt that water had to play a large roll in the shot but it couldn’t be the only thing. A picture of waves doesn’t do it for me, you might as well take a picture of a nicely mown lawn, add people and a coastline, then it works for me.

FWIW my leading vote getter is my least favourite entry, I’ll never figure voters out.

I love this theme, can we do it again next week? 🙂 There’s an overwhelming amount of great photos in the contest, so b-sides seem pointless. But I had trouble picking so I wanted to at least post the “almost chose it” ones here.

I have to agree, there are some amazing shots in this thread. I also had a difficult time picking mine, I had to ask my wife for advice. Here are some of my b-sides:

(I used a similar shot for trees, so I wanted to go in a new direction)

Wow, I thought I was doing well with 221 views of this (http://www.flickr.com/photos/21883298@N08/4260486733/) (NSFW-ish) but 70K, 20K views for a pic, that’s amazing.

Sorry guys–went out with a friend tonight, and honestly, I’m not sure how I missed that photo earlier today. But it’s gone now.

You mean you’re not sitting at home huddled over the computer looking for errant entries? 😉

The Farktography threads are the best moderated ones on Fark, I think you’re doing an awesome job.

I went out this morning to shoot for this one, I had a shot in mind, I scouted the locale during another shoot.
(http://www.flickr.com/photos/21883298@N08/4824604866/in/set-72157623259318279/) it’s the couch on the right, there were also some chairs on the platform to the right.

I showed up this morning and someone was sleeping on the couch, and I thought ‘shot, I can’t photograph that now’. A second later I felt bad, because that was the guys bed and all his worldly belongings. Then I started to wonder if I could photograph that scene instead…

Does that make me a bad person? My first thought wasn’t ‘poor guy living between an industrial building and a railyard’, but rather, that the planned shot was gone.

In the end I walked away quietly without any pics. I had to go with plan B, which I think will work out fine.

I’m up for switching this one with waterscapes (mostly because I just came back from taking photos for that one). Fish are going to be difficult, but I have a plan or two for doing that.

I like to clarify one of my points, I’m not saying I’m not winning because I post at 7am on Thursday. I know I’m not winning because there are better photos than mine.

I mentioned the voting while in TFland because the graph looked that way, if it’s not that makes me happier, because it means I have a chance at winning with the right photo.

Again, I really like the Farktography contests, it is one of the reasons I now have a good camera and it has given me an excuse/reason to go wandering on weekend mornings.

I’m a relative noob to Farktography, and I have browsed the stats pages here, one thing that pops up is that most of the voting takes place in the first hours of the competition, while it’s still in TFland. Some of us do not have TF and by the time we post no one is voting. So a casual poster (or liter) may get discouraged from posting because there is no way of winning or placing in the top ten, because there just aren’t enough clicks to get the votes.

Another issue could be that some of the themes are too well defined, and may limit choice. In Games, how many Scrabble pis were posted (I know I put one in), this week there were 3-4 with cigarrettes. Maybe a looser definition would help. Themes like Green, or teh funnay may produce more variety in the posting and therefore more interest. I know I stopped looking after the 3rd Scrabble pic.

None of this going to stop me from participating. I’d like to win, but I know I have a long way to go to be as good some of you guys and girls. I’m here because the theme gives me boundaries and a goal to shoot for. I really just want to get better at photography in general.

    that’s just my 2 cents.

Whoops, sorry about that. It’s fixed now.

ETA: Schnee has stats that track average number of Farktographers and entries:
    http://www.schneeworld.com/fsm/static-reports/distinctbytheme.html

As well as total votes per theme:
    http://www.schneeworld.com/fsm/static-reports/totalvotespertheme.html

    Makes for interesting reading.

It sort of looks random at first glance.

Maybe the vote whoring theme can be bumped up a bit, or find out what the trend was with the popular ones and have more of those contests. Either that or we just do this because it’s fun.

It’s most likely because it’s summer and people are on vacation, or spending time outside.

I read the theme as “could be mistaken for b&w” and went form there, so I think I’ve got some shots. That being said it’s a challenging theme, in a good way.

Thanks for the clarification, I started reading the thread and thought that one of my entries may not count.
