ElseIf I took a picture of the picture, and made it obviously so, would it be eligible for a future contest? Elsewise, I’m going to have to borrow my youngest niece or a cousin, recompose, and de-saturate (I think it’s a cute shot at a cute angle; kids are only 2 once.)

Kestrana and Else I think perhaps my monitor settings aren’t as saturated as yours. In my example pic, the dust/dirt looks pretty grey to me, not brown. Under ‘monitor’ settings I’m at 32bit, under color management I’m using sRGB. Are there better setting to choose?

I ask as perhaps my other ‘good candidates’ aren’t so good as I suppose. Don’t want to blow my entries with stuff other people see that I don’t. Example, I was planning to use a bigger version of this:

    http://fossilspringsaz.com/pics/2010/jun/20/IMG_4091websmall.jpg

(one of my b-sides from ‘Pan’; even when I kick up the saturation I don’t see much color; leaves go olive green at best.)

Reviewing, I’m thinking there’s going to be a lot of variation in not-really-but-looks-that-way black and whites. I have shots that individually look B&W, but compared to others, have plenty of color. In the contest, I imagine juxtiposed against each other, very little will look black and white when compared with shots above and below (unless someone really cheats on the saturations). I have two quality shots I like of birds, for example, both look B&W, but next to each other, one looks quite blue and the other quite brownish. I think we’re goinging to wind up with a lot of variation from pic to pic, but the overall vibe will be ‘monochrome’. Given different moniters and such, not sure how else it could be, anyway.

It will be an interesting contest. Of course, I do have my moon shot (a shear gimme in the b/w dept), but I haven’t decided which I’ll post as one of the three (and I haven’t decided on the ‘other’ astroshot I’m considering, either, or whether to save it for another venue.)

Good help, SM. Ironically, under those conditions, I still have 1 ‘thread’ of contamination (and some itty bitty spots but those I can live with); it was a single ‘thread’ I was trying to get rid of in the first place. Now, it’s just another one in a different spot. I’ll try again, keeping in mind the caveats and such.

(finished) Cleaned and SUPER spiffy!! Vs when I started, I can only see one little smudge (hardly noticable!) I owe you a new Swingline!

There’s a place in Az called Tonto Natural Bridge; a very small natural stream falls into a narrow canyon. If you’re down below, it’s pretty much like rain. Perhaps SS can clarify if such uses would be acceptable.

Haha, I didn’t catch that the first time; thanks Leica for pointing that out!

I’m fortunate in that I have several to choose from in the archives (maybe not weeners, but good candidates). Still, it’s too bad I won’t be able to use this. Scanned picture of me when I was about 2.

The colors nearly faded away (I recovered some through puter manipulation, though, in another version.) Maybe I’ll use it for vote whoring or something.

You can always “make” rain too if you’re desperate, we’re not going to know the difference 😛

So, precipitation falling from the sky that *didn’t* condense from clouds is okay? Because that opens up a couple pictures for me. 🙄

(totally natural, mind you, though; no hoses here.)

I have a ‘sepiated’ picture also that I was wondering about…and also a very old picture where the colors have almost completely faded. But as I read it, “that could be mistaken for B&W”, yet also (in the original thread), Kestrana is quoted, “the vast majority of your picture should be black, white or grey.”

So I’m thinking sepia is out, but something like this (not that I’d use it, but to convey my understanding) would be in? Kestrana, pleasest clarify? Picture of my truck after an accident; was taking it apart and photographing in stages so I remembert how to puts it back togedder.

It’s MOSTLY B&W, and if the dipstick was pink instead of yellow, could be mistaken for a scene in Schindler’s List…

    First, congrats!

Second, all of these pictures are ineligible for “Vote Whoring” unless the relative (or friend) who took them submits them!!

    Just saying.

    Clouddancer, indeed. You should be.

It could have been better, sure. But 1/2 the years instead of ‘monsoons’ we get ‘non-soons’, so that’s why I never delete a picture and own a backup terabyte drive (I’ll find something…somewhere.) Might not have a ‘winning’ shot, but I know damned well I at least have something to enter. My average picture vote score is 25% more votes than just a month ago, btw. I must be doing something right.

This will be a challenge; it never rains here, it only threatens to. Well, we get 6 inch rains–one drop every six inches. I’ll have to go archiving again.

Sleeping; it was just my photography grwowless at work; cams were set at ‘b’ and not ‘i’. Elsinore was spot on, and not that I have a millisecond timer (but I love my minute timer, which is still ticking away in the background after 2 hours), but it seems at least reasonably accurate.

Okay. Must nap. in 3 hours, I have to work. I’ll be back for discussion either just before my shift (prior to 6ish pm MST) or on my first break (10ish pm MST). Damned hobbies. How much sleep did Edison lose when embroiled in discovering a decent filament?

You are correct; I had it set to ‘B’ (I mentioned the ‘b’ and ‘i’ in my post, but didn’t notice it was on ‘b’ when I replied. Once on ‘i’, I can believe the settings. No lube required. (Damn. One less good use for lube that’s going wasted with my new work life social schedule.) *piffle*

Elsinore; both seem pretty slow at low shutter speeds; the older one (based on appearances) seems to practically be bulb–until I release, it’s open (actually, it seems that way on most settings. The newer one also, but to a much lesser extent; but I’m sure the ‘lube’ or whatever in either is as old as the camera). Both are equipped with the remote cord threads, though, so maybe that’s by design? The newer one has the 7 listed shutter settings; the older has ” 5,10,20,30,50,75,100,150,200,300. The older one also goest to f/18 while the newer to f/16. Either need servicing, but both seem servicable, at least.
