In terms of shooting a silouhette against the sun, it’s possible to cheat a bit by focusing on your subject and leaving the sun out of focus – the circle of confusion for an out of focus sun will be bigger than the sun is in the sky. Take a look at these, both shot with a 300mm F4

The way I interpret the theme, that shot (while gorgeous) wouldn’t qualify as the sun isn’t visible. The theme description says it can be partially obscured, but must be visible.

However, I’ve been known to overinterpret, so hopefully U-Man can give a more definitive clarification on what he’d like to see allowed/disallowed.

I will wait on U-Man’s final call, but do have a ton of Bees for this one, so I am not worried.

I’ll also bow to U-Man‘s discretion but I would agree with

Elsinore that there’s not enough sun visible in that shot for this theme.

/ennuipoet rushes to the Themes forum to suggest “Sun Behind Buildings”

No, but I am about to submit a Classic for Skylines!

What she (and kestrana) said. At least part of the sun – not just rays – needs to be visible. IMO if you can get a star-burst, there’s bright sun coming through.

And for the initial “is it safe” question – I shoot into the sun all of the time. I don’t use a long lens and long shutter speeds while pointing right into the sun. But this one is at 280 mm on a 7D (APS-C) at ISO 250 and 1/8000. It was sunrise on the way to work.

Ha! Thanks. I was really just showing some examples of the spirit of the theme. I will be combing the archive over the next few days.

Planning the same, though I’ve taken some bees with this theme in mind…

What is the general opinion of “remnants” or colored spots coming from the sun in a photo? I chose my photos a couple weeks ago, but one of them has several spots coming from the sun. Also, what causes these? Here is an example: http://www.bender16v.com/chris/Spots.jpg

I’ve still been out trying to take more photos for this one, trying to get something better, but it has been cloudy around here every day.

What you have there is Lens Flare! The optical elements in your lens are reflecting the light causing the spots and streaks. All lenses have it to a certain degree, higher end lenses control it better. It is not always a bad thing and can be used artistically…at least one of my entries this week uses LF to my advantage.

Lens Flare is also a minor deity to the Fark Photoshopping Community,

    Good article on lens flare

    BLASPHEMER!

Lens flare has NOTHING on Gaussian Blur! Nothing, you hear me? NOTHING!!!

Gaussian Blur is the ONLY tool worth using! Lens flare is evil.

After seeing U-man’s ‘example’ photos, which are likely but his B’s, I suspect we’re all competing for 2nd place. I have several sun-in-frame shots that I love, but they’ve had graduated filters applied to them to balance the foreground and sky, so going to have to be digging a little deeper or hoping to get out for a few more shots before Wed night.

    A couple of my contenders:

    Oh no you DITENT!

Clearly, the only tool of worth in the ENTIRE arsenal of Photoshop is Lens Flare! Gaussian Blur is a perversion! A DEVIANCE! If we start allowing Gaussian Blur then where will it stop? Motion Blur? Even…..(swallows bile)Radial Blur?

Won’t someone think of the children?

Not that I plan on using it, but what about the sun through clouds, where you can see the suns there, but not so much that you get lens flare or blowout?

    Example: http://fossilspringsaz.com/pics/2012/apr/18/sif.jpg

//not planning on using, but a fair example of what I mean.
