aspidites, what’s going on in your rainbow bubble shot? That’s very fractal-esque – I like it.

It was an oil and water mixture in a glass ashtray that I shot with a MP-E 65mm with dual flash set on opposite sides of the ashtray.

I forgot…I got the color by putting a cd-rom under the ashtray. Depending how I angled the flashes would give me different colors.

This was taken the same night

Awesome! That ties it all together now. Do you have a link to that one any larger?

I used a CD as a prism/diffraction lens in the “Scanner as Camera” contest (it’s sitting on top of a magnifying glass):

    .

Your setup is definitely going on my list of shots to try to replicate.

(For you mad scientists out there, I tried that scan with a blank CD, DVD, and Blu-ray disc. The CD gave the best (most prismatic) results. I suspect that’s due to the pitch of the grooves, but I leave the proof of that to the reader ).

For those like me that were wowed by nwdad‘s gumball shot, here’s the setup from his flickr stream.

I wish Nikon had an equivalent to that lens. Everything I see out of it is amazing.

They do. It’s a fully manual lens, and it’s macro so infinity focus ins’t require. Bust out that glass in the center, open it the rest of the way up with a dremel. That’s what I plan to do if Nikon doesn’t have an equivalent by the time we’re ready to buy one.

I love the gumball shot. I think it’s going to fast and furiously make it into the top few spots.

There are a coulpe of ways to get the same magnification settings with nikon. The MP-E 65 is basicaly just a billows system put on a lens. You could get an older nikon bellows, I was using the PB 6 when I was shooting slides. Novoflex makes a Reverse Lens Adapter for canon, so I would think they make them for nikon too.

Or you could just do the sane and easy thing by switching over to canon. j/k 😆 or am I.

I’ve seen that shot before and it is driving me crazy trying to think of where! It was either a Flickr stream or the Strobist website, or one of the far too many photography related sites that I read. I may have even seen it in a photography book.

If nwdad pops up in this thread, please pass on where your photo has been featured, it’s driving me crazy! 😀

No, wait, never mind! It was Peta Pixel:

With a lovely step by step of the shoot!

    I KNEW I’d seen it before! 😀

Yeah I really like that image too. I’ve been wanting to shoot through water on a larger scale too since I saw them do it on last season of ANTM.

The thing is that the MP-E is optimized for shooting at high magnification. I’ve done some high mag stuff other ways and the results haven’t ever looked as good. There are some Nikon optics that could maybe give comparable results on a bellows (Ultra-Micro Nikkors and stuff), but they’re rare and expensive. Nikon used to make some *seriously* hard-core macro gear back in the day (take a look at this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/270835456131?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649) but they don’t any more, sadly 🙁

I didn’t mean to sound like I was trivializing the MP-E 65 I love the shots I am able to get with it and it is well worth the money if you are into shooting macro.

I was using the PB 6 bellows with the F100 an extension ring and a reversing ring with the 60 mm f2.8 micro lens when I was shooting nikon gear. I was able to use the D100 with this set up but I wouldn’t know if you could use it with the newer DSLR’s. I think my GF sold my extension rings but I think I still have the 60mm, the reversing ring and the PB 6 bellows. She will probably be putting the rest of my nikon gear on ebay when she decides to buy some new furniture.

Here are some links that used to help set up older micro gear on the nikon cameras.

Round? That’d be a full-body self-portrait. Somehow, I think that someone would end up deleting it, if not using the ban hammer on me, especially if I posted a near-nude.

bandy just blur the shot, mark it as nsfw and link to the original. I’ve done it 😉

Jesus H. Christ on a Crotch Rocket. I’m glad Ron Garan didn’t enter this one:

He’s not a farker, is he? If he is, he could KILL every single astro contest we have, even if/when I get access to the 10 meter class scopes. I’d kinda like to see that, actually.
