ParticipantAnd on the note of not finding b/w film, mods,–is it okay to take pictures with b/w in mind, then scan them as such, or is that going too far from ‘film’. I just shot a roll that I’d envisioned in b/w until I found nobody carries it (except one shop too far away to drive to). I shot it anyway.
B/W conversions are always fine.
My opinion differs from orionid’s. I think the spirit of the theme is pretty strict.
But, honestly and truly, it’s just an opinion. And it’s not even a strong one, at that.

ParticipantI think Alaska has DST as well, though. It’s Arizona and Hawaii that don’t. These also just happen to be the two states I have lived in for the past six years.
The UK also has BST vs. GMT – we just had our switch 2 weeks ago.
/Thanks Rav – I’ll start checking at midnight my time just to be safe the time change didn’t mess anything up (it’s too early in the a.m. for me to do the real maths here). Send me a pm with your links and I’ll get them up right away for you 🙂

When I took photography as a vocational course, we learned how to convert color to B&W in the darkroom. Requires a stack of contrast filters. It can and has been done for nearly as long as film’s been around.

I want to agree with you U-Man, the film purist in me says that if you know you are shooting film make up your mind, commit to color or black and white BEFORE you shoot. But, today, with black and white film and processing hard to come by outside of your kitchen sink…I think we have to let post process conversions in. Even finding C41 B&W film these days is not easy outside of a camera store and the last time I had C41 B&W developed (three or so years ago) at a drug store the photo tech was convinced his machine was damaged because the film came out B&W, he apologized when he gave the me the prints. I had to break it to him gently that it was supposed to be that way.

I concur. The photos should be entered as shot on film. Any digital manipulation should be limited to that needed to scan or otherwise convert to digital media, crop to the print/slide/negative itself, and (if desired) clean up scratches or dust from the scanning/conversion process or on the slides/negatives/prints. If you’re then converting a color photo to black and white or otherwise manipulating it, it becomes less about the shot you got on film and more about what you can do digitally with the image. That’s not what this theme was about. If, however, you wanted to convert color film to b/w in the dark room, as Yugoboy mentioned is possible, I think that would be in the spirit of the theme. Doing it in Photoshop (or GIMP) falls outside of that as the theme very specifically says,
“no digital nonsense”

ParticipantI just bought a roll of Ilford B&W C-41 process film. I hope my A-1 works, or it’s going to be a looooong night.
Edit- it actually works lol. Hopefully the hotshoe does too 😛

ParticipantWhat’s the difference then between shooting and scanning in color then converting vice scanning in greyscale regardless of film type? It’s no different than when I project color negatives onto a black and white paper.
I don’t plan on doing this, everything’s pretty much as shot, but I don’t feel a need to unnecessarily tighten down on this one.
On a side note, I’ve got a few bees to choose from. Anyone care to help me pare it down?

I like the one that says From Orionid under it, hope that helps

I think the difference is not just the letter, but (more importantly) the spirit of the theme. Lovesandwich proposed this as one theme to get away from digital as much as possible. That said, there’d obviously be no way any of us could know if someone scanned a color slide, negative, or print in grayscale on the scanner side, but again spirit of the theme…

ParticipantGiven that:
1) I wouldn’t want to go against the spirit of the theme
2) I slept throughout the entire day
3) My CVS apparently only processes film until the day shift goes home, so I’m SOL on developing unless I screw myself out of sleep for my job that pays my utilities and such nonsense
4) I’m busy tonight trying to stupidly capture a fleetingly dim asteroid on a moon-lit night–no mean feat…(*fail* is eminent…)I guess I’m just going to skip this week.
Farktographer, enjoy the totalness!! Consider it a ‘boon’.
Assuming (yeah, I know…) I get my ‘carp’ together by the 16th, I’ll see ya’ll for next week’s contest…

KeymasterDidn’t you have some film stuff you shot this summer?
November 9, 2011 at 5:01 pm #41421CauseISaidSo
ParticipantI’ve got stuff that I shot back in the 80’s that I was really looking forward to going through and scanning. Unfortunately, it and my scanner are 1500 miles away right now.
Good luck everyone!
