U-Man
Participant…
did we decide on hints? titles? linking to the song on you tube?
I didn’t see an answer on the subject of including info about the album/song. I’ve only got one so far and it doesn’t needs hints or links. The people that know it will get it and nobody else is likely to care. 🙂 But the second idea I have would need a link since it’s not a group that’s widely known. If it’s allowed I’d post a link to the album if I went ahead with that idea. So, what are the guidelines for what info we can post in the text of our entries this week?
I didn’t notice the prior question. But I would very much support including the song/album title.

ParticipantI, personally, would appreciate song titles/albums at least. I was wondering about youtube links earlier today, myself. I doubt that they’d be widely clicked, but one of mine is just enough off the beaten path that our younger viewers aren’t likely to get it. It’s a beautiful picture, and I’m going to use it either way, but encouraging links is a question I had in my head.

ParticipantI’ve done two album covers and would like to link to the originals. I think that would add to the experience for those who wish to click and would be neutral to those who didn’t.

ParticipantBy far, this contest proved to take more of my time in idea crafting than any other. Very challenging to figure out what might work, then to see what actually does (at least to me). I wish I had more resources to put into this one. But along the way, I created a couple economical directional lighting/shadow setups that will work nicely in other themes as I think they will in this one, so there’s a bonus for me. A most fun challenge, though. Just hope my commonish-selections aren’t done to death.
I certainly plan on adding the artists’ names and album/song title, and I don’t feel it’s necessary in my case to link further, but if pictures are to be reproductions of existing album artwork, I’d certainly like a link to see the original to better appreciate what the farktographer has done.

ParticipantThat’s the thing. I’ve got a John Denver so far (which I don’t know how many will get), and a Jimmy Buffet (which I’m pretty sure most of us older farts have contemplated at least once) and am hoping to get something from Merle Haggard, and (with a lot of luck) a Paul McCartney piece. The latter two, I think would stand without any more than a pointer to the artist, the former, song titles may be enough, but I’m not sure.
I suspect that linking to the songs or cover art will help some folks, but at the same time, I doubt most people will bother. Look at how many folks click through to larger versions of the photos – realistically, not that many. The more I think about it, I personally wouldn’t have a problem with links, but I wouldn’t count on them helping explain the piece.
-edit: I’ll be adding artist and song titles, but I’m on the fence on links. I’d like to know what other folks think.

ParticipantI did suggest this earlier, but perhaps someone who actually has the stuff available on hand could do it. http://www.lyrics.com/black-coffee-lyrics-ella-fitzgerald.html (lyrics)
Black Coffee – it’s an old jazz standard (another suggestion, actually, to look through those) that my vocal instructor kept trying to get me to sing. If I was setting it up, I’d have a cup of coffee and some cigarettes lying next to it, and possibly a woman drinking coffee looking out the window maybe with a cigarette in her hand or something along those lines. Only, we have no cigarettes or coffee in the house. I was going to do it at my parent’s this weekend, but they weren’t brewing any coffee and there was too much commotion and I forgot.
A couple of others I thought of needed alcohol (or at least alcohol bottles), not the 12-ouncers but fifths I think they’re called, but we’re not big drinkers and the only alcohol bottles we have are Parrot’s Bay rum (pineapple and coconut rum, actually) and they won’t fit the spirit of the songs (way too poor to even think about buying a big enough bottle of alcohol for this competition when we won’t even drink it afterward).
I plan on at least titling mine with the song titles, and if they want to look it up after that they can.

Participanti’ll probably go with “hint in file name” because IMO if you can’t convey the song .. well that’s what the contest is about after all. god alone knows what will resonate with the voters. OTOH a snippet of lyrics might be in order. two of mine should be recognizable to older voters and the last will be one of those “Oh yeah” things. again to older voters.

ParticipantSome of my favorite songs are that of Classical Music.
Summon the Heroes, The Olympic Spirit, The 1812 Overture, Farandole.
The only one of these I even REMOTELY have a picture for is the 1812. I have gone to the DC 4th of the July concert for the past three years.
If you fellow farktographers were going to do these songs…any suggestions??
Summon / Heroes – Footballers coming out of the tunnel, National Guardsmen at homecoming with wives and children, The Iwo Jima statue at Arlington, Pickett’s Charge reenactors (or Grant’s defense at Pittsburgh Landing / Shiloh if you’re yankee), Or go with the “everyday heroes” like good parents or soup kitchen workers.

ParticipantI’m going with make it obvious.
Also, Olavf, I hope your Jimmy Buffet song isn’t my Jimmy Buffet bong.

ParticipantI’m going with make it obvious.
That’s more or less my plan. Song title and artist.

D’oh I just saw your facebook post. I was going to say probably not, but it appears we’re sharing the same bong. *puff* *puff* *pass*

Participant… Jimmy Buffet bong.
Is that like a beer bong, but for margaritas?
*makes margarita in blender, pours down funnel*
OW ICE CREAM HEADACHE!
/not the worst case typo – after all “d” is right next to “s”

NOT a typo?
This should be interesting. Can’t wait for this contest to start.November 29, 2010 at 9:25 pm #34253U-Man
Participantolavf and orionid are sharing a dong? What?
November 29, 2010 at 9:49 pm #34254orionid
ParticipantGreat…. One little typo sounded good for a while, got better with margaritas, and now apparently there’s an epic dong that can be shared on both coasts.
Far out.
