ParticipantSoftness at high ISOs can also be the result of noise reduction, which tends to remove detail.

ParticipantI shot a baseball game today and looking at the photos I’m almost wondering if the lens is still broken… I know that I shouldn’t be expecting razor sharpness out of this lens, but I’m feeling like it should at least be giving me a little more.
Here’s the pics I shot from today’s game:

I’m really noticing the lack of sharpness beyond 200mm. Also click the magnifying glass icon at the upper right of the picture to zoom in to the full res that I uploaded to Picasa at.

ParticipantYou’re not a cheapskate unless you shoot with a Holga.

ParticipantYeah I threw it on my camera and tested it as soon as I got it back. It never was a razor-sharp lens, but it’s definitely back where it should be.
Analogy
ParticipantYeah, out of warranty because I’m the second owner, and about $1,400 new.

ParticipantYou already have mine, but http://picasaweb.google.com/stephan.ahonen/

ParticipantI think she wants to make sure her entries are extraordinarily mundane.

ParticipantThe video was for live cable broadcast and projection screens in the house, not what you’re thinking of. The photogs were from a company contracted by the school to get pictures for all the grads.
I kinda see what you mean about needing to see more “this is my one special day” style coverage than what I have, but I don’t really think any of the events I’ve shot have really lent themselves to that. My bass player is getting married in a couple weeks and they’ve roped me into shooting that, though, so maybe soon.

ParticipantPrint that one huge and put it on your wall.

ParticipantMy kitchen counter is going to be a MESS after I get done shooting this. Orange and apple juice EVERYWHERE.

ParticipantThese would work, I think, but they’re not exactly cheap: http://www.omegasatter.com/v2/products/displaycategory.cfm?CatID=482
My wallet just cringed in terror. I think I’ll forego putting this flash on my 30D for now. =D

ParticipantCurious, it’s all about how often you change lenses and what apertures you shoot at. The guy in the video uses prime lenses and has to swap lenses every time he wants to change focal lengths. Think about every time you change the zoom on your lens, and imagine having to swap lenses every time instead. That can really add up, and as a working photog he does a LOT more shooting than you or I, so the lens changes add up even more.
He might also do a lot of work at smaller apertures such as f/16 and above. Dust is a much bigger problem at those smaller apertures than it is wide open.

ParticipantI ran across this video on the Strobist blog. Seems like a good way to do it.

ParticipantI found a couple of them on ebay. In the description on at least 2 of the auctions it mentions that it has an AERODYNAMIC DESIGN. So it’s got that going for it. 😉
It’s true, I took it into a wind tunnel and it performed flawlessly. It’s perfect for taking skydiving pictures. Or not.
If that’s for the same camera, they’re blatantly lying. “Deluxe Electronic Flash,” “Fast Recycling of flash,” ha. It’s no speedlite, that’s for sure. And it’s a good 5-6 seconds between flashes, I tried to light the picture of the camera with the flash but I could only get about 5 flashes out of it in a 30 second long exposure, so I had to switch to the flashlight technique.
“Zoom type lens,” maybe they’re referring to the hood that pops out when you open the aperture, because it sure as hell doesn’t refer to the lens.
“Red Eye Reduction,” sure, if by that you mean detaching the flash and holding it away from the camera so the light isn’t reflecting straight back through your subject’s eyes.
I like your photo of it!
Thanks, I spent probably a half an hour trying out different lighting techniques before I got what you see.

ParticipantI found that the Rebel fits perfectly in my hand thanks to my little finger being able to curl under the camera without any discomfort.
See, that’s what most people talk about when they say it’s too small. I personally like the camera big enough to take up my whole hand. In that respect even the slightly beefier 30D is a little too small, I had to add a battery grip.
