Sorry to hear that, too, Yugoboy. In that case, have yourself a double helping of wishes for a better 2014! Heck, I’ll go all out and wish you an absolutely GREAT 2014. 🙂

// Can’t say my 2013 was all that good or even in the top 10, but in the grand scheme of things, I really have nothing to complain about.

Aww, sorry to hear that, Els. Christmas is not a good time for mama to be sick (as I’m sure you know without me having to say so). Hope you get to feeling better soon!

And Merry Christmas to all of my forum friends out there. I hope 2013 was good to you and best wishes for a better 2014!

And I’m back after a 3.5 year absence with a decent performance.

Welcome back! It has been quite a while; you’ve been gone since before I even started!

And FWIW, I think your puppy shot is adorable and ought to be doing even better than it is. But, I’m probably on the wrong side of the fence on the dog vs cat adoration on Fark. 😉

I wouldve been ok with changing it to 10 entries for this week.

Wouldn’t have helped. Then I’d be agonizing over 30 candidates trying to pick 10 instead of 10 trying to pick 3. 🙂

‘Cuda and fluffy, we ended up on the sleet+snow side of the line this time, but we got your side of it back in Dec of 2007, so I know what you’re going through. We were without power for 3 days on that one, so it’s good that you both still have power & internet. Stay safe & warm!

It turns out that I’ve taken more pictures of bridges than I realized, so I’ve got some B-sides this week for anyone interested.

Maybe I should archive dive more but I really hate to play farktography that way.

Heck, if I didn’t archive dive, I’d rarely get to participate at all and then it’d just be too easy to walk away entirely. Besides, I actually kinda enjoy archive diving as it “lets” me periodically review/relive my past photos (and the events/trips documented therein).

But I know exactly what you’re talking about when you say you had to decide what wasn’t going to get done. Just keep making the right decision for you & yours and know you’re welcome back any time.

It has been a long time, fluffy. Hope everything’s OK with you & yours and hope to see you in the contests again soon.

    Thanks Els!

// Although I gotta agree with the winner of a previous low-vote contest (I think maybe it was fluffy?) who said something like an 11-vote win just doesn’t shine quite as bright. Don’t get me wrong, that’s not a complaint at all. With the holiday & a specific theme during an already low voter turnout period, it’s expected. Just sayin’, ya know?

I like the idea of making this a periodical contest. As for its timing, I’m good with whatever y’all decide, but I agree with Els that we need some pretty easy, open themes around the holiday times. For me at least, Christmas time is always much busier than anything in June or July.

CISS – I take the approach of bracketing conservatively. Disk space is almost free. If HDR even tickles the back of my brain, I’ll bracket and then only process if I can’t get the results I want without doing so.

That’s the problem – HDR never seems to tickle my brain when out shooting, only when I get back, look through the shots and say, “That’d be an awesome shot if I could’ve gotten everything properly exposed. I need to remember to do some bracketing shots next time.” But when next time comes…

I suppose that someone has already “invented” this or perhaps there’s an easier way, but it’s new for me.

The two HDR tools I’ve played with have a single-image HDR mode that I’m assuming does this (or at least something like it). I think it works by sliding the 8-bit output window into the RAW image’s 12 or 14 bits to create multiple versions of the image.

Nice saves on your example images, BTW.

For some reason, I never think about shooting multiple exposures for HDR until I’m looking through the results later so (combined with time constraints) I didn’t have much to work with this week. I did manage to scrape up some entries from back when I got my first DSLR and was still playing with the features. I don’t think they’re top ten entries, but they’re entries at least.
