ParticipantOK, question answered. I just checked his site again and he posted this in response:
Dean – yeah – Ok – a sum of 12 images shown here – but it was put up only an hour after the last shutter click in the series . . . pretty warm. ~Dave

ParticipantInteresting analysis, chupathingie. Can you (or anyone else) recommend some good (hopefully open source or freeware) software for combining astro shots to reduce noise?

ParticipantJealous. As. Fuck.

I’m with you on that one. That is truly an awesome composition. Although I think I have to agree with the comment from another user on his site: “You can’t tell me that shot ever existed in the camera as shown though.”
From my viewing area here, I’d had to have had a 30+ MINUTE exposure to capture that many streaks, much less coming from the same section of sky. Maybe it’s a layered composition (that would also explain the clarity of the stars)?
None of which I’m saying to take anything away from the pic. I’d really like to learn how it was composed, so if anyone has any tips on how to make a shot like that happen, please share.

Participantloki, my camera manual says this about condensation:
If the camera is suddenly brought in from the cold into a warm room, condensation may form on the camera and internal parts. To prevent condensation, first put the camera in a sealed plastic bag and let it adjust to the warmer temperature before taking it out of the bag.
I was in St. Pete FL a couple of weeks ago on vacation and ran into the same issue. As soon as I stepped out of the car’s A/C, my glasses and camera would fog up. I just let it acclimate before using it and it seemed to do fine.

ParticipantCause; those must be pretty short exposures but they’re nice shots. Each features the Pleiades in the lower right, and a piece of sky that isn’t really centered on any constellation I can identify (Aries should be above it, though.)
rav, you’re right about the exposures – the first is 6 secs and the second is 4.
As for the constellations, here they are as best I can tell. Keep in mind this is a 10mm wide-angle, so there’s going to be some fisheye aspect to it. (Click for larger size.)

ParticipantWhile we’re talking about stargazing, I’m guessing most of you probably already know about this, but I’ll throw it out there anyway just in case: If you’re interested in astronomy and you don’t have it already, do yourself a favor and download Stellarium (http://www.stellarium.org). It’s about the coolest open source app I’ve run across.

ParticipantMy daughter and I drove about 40 miles out of town last night to a place I’d previously decided would be great for stargazing. It’s basically a flat river plain “bowl” between two “mountain” (or what passes for mountains here in OK) ridges. I’d only ever been there during the day on my cycle, but it turned out to be a nice spot – really dark skies and no obstructions for miles.
The show itself was a little disappointing. We were out for about 2 hours between 1-3am and saw probably about 40, far short of the predicted 60/hour. Great time nonetheless; probably going back tonight with my wife and youngest son.
I took 131 pictures and managed to grab 2. Pix pop to the originals. Both are shot wide-angle at 10mm, so the streaks themselves are somewhat small.

ParticipantVery cool. And depressing at the same time…
Thanks. And I hear ya.
I think I picked the wrong contest to implement this. Fare thee well, oh Greatest Averages Evar list, I hardly knew ye. 🙁

ParticipantJust a heads up – I created a post in the Software forum (Displaying places in the voting results page) describing how to add places (1st, 2nd, etc.) to the existing voting results page, if anyone’s interested.

ParticipantI’ve rented from here before and had a good experience: http://www.lensrentals.com
They state in their FAQs that they’ll ship to Canada, but it looks like it’s pricey:
DO YOU SHIP TO CANADA?
Yes we do, although we don?t have it automated in the shopping cart yet. We finally received our import certificate and can ship to Canada effective October 1, 2009. Until the costs are automated in the shopping cart please be aware that shipping prices to Canada are higher, at least $70 round trip and going up from there. Please call us for a quote.CauseISaidSo
ParticipantI’ve got the Canon equivalent. I doubt anything I could tell you about it would be useful in your evaluation, but if there is anything, ask away.

Participantolavf: I have a text file that I just make a copy of, and replace the links and text. Makes it easier for me to remember the formatting I like
That’s exactly what I do, too.
If anyone’s looking for an image host, I use imgur (www.imugr.com). They’ve been pretty stable for me.

Participantpowerfulkatrinka: Here’s a template for linking to a larger version:
Remove the tags if you don’t want it centered. Remove target=”_blank” if you don’t want it to pop. Replace LargeImageURL and SmallImageURL with the actual image URLs, of course.

ParticipantI’ll take it. Appreciate your graciousness, NBD.
rav, paypal will follow shortly. And I’m definitely a he.
CauseISaidSo
ParticipantIf NBD hasn’t got it yet, I’ll take it for $15.
