Participant“look – we’ve had digital cameras since 1960. Imagine what we’ve got now!”
I’m sometimes amazed at the resolution of the images on Google Earth/maps, but imagine what the classified version of that looks like.
Regarding the parens, replace ‘(‘ with ‘%28’ and ‘)’ with %29 and you’ll get the bbcode to work:

ParticipantI think I understand what you’re saying, Elsinore, and if so, I agree. Basically, it’s this: if it’s not a “traditional” seat (something with the express purpose of having people sit on), then it should have some(one/thing) sitting on it to make it a seat.
Of course, it’s U-Man’s theme, so I’ll let him deal with that quagmire… 🙂

ParticipantIf it makes any difference to you CauseISaidSo I am also using a picture from the Concorde…
Cool, good luck with it! It really is a tiny cabin, isn’t it? It’s not one of my final selections, so we won’t have competing pix.
I’m an idiot. I have been looking at this name – CauseISaidSo – for the past couple months wondering who CAUSEL was.
Yeah, I think the ‘I’ is sometimes mistaken for an ‘L’ when abbreviating. You’ll also see it as CISS. I had to drop the “Be” from the name when registering here because when I registered BISS (my fark name), I screwed up and entered the wrong email and so could never confirm the account. I thought it might timeout without confirmation, but it never did and so here I’m CISS instead of BISS. Clear as mud, right?
As for the name itself, when I registered it on fark some 7 years ago I was up to my elbows in teenagers and my dad’s favorite answer to “Why?” suddenly made a whole lot more sense. 🙂

ParticipantIt is cool. Especially if you consider what all those parts must’ve retailed for back then and what you could buy with that now.
This will date me, but it reminds me of a series of Circuit Cellar articles by Steve Ciarcia in Byte magazine (back when it was still a magazine, and even before that when it had significant coverage of hardware/homebrew). He took these new-at-the-time DRAM chips, which used CCDs for the transistor memories, and found that if he carefully scraped off the black plastic chip coating to reveal the transistors inside, he could use it as a crude digital imager. I think it had a resolution of something like 64×64 and 16-bits of gray. I’m fairly certain I’ve still got that issue, initially stored away with the intent to build that some day…

ParticipantA friend’s dog likes to climb the tree in the backyard. Like, ten feet up.
I’m at a loss for words. I don’t think I’ve ever seen or even heard about a tree climbing dog, but that’s hilarious. I’m not sure how I’d react if I just randomly stumbled on that IRL.

ParticipantDecision making for this theme shows the difficulty in choosing between: a good photo, what fits the theme, what I think the voters will think.
Nail. Head. Direct hit.
Thanks for the feedback, U-Man.

ParticipantThanks, zincprincess! Between you and rav, you’ve hit all of my favorites as well, which means for all practical purposes you’ve both been no help at all! 😉
Perhaps I should create an alt and run another 3 under that… (j/k of course).

ParticipantThanks for the feedback, rav. The ones you selected are at the top of my list, too, but I also really like 14-16 and I’d really kinda like to post the Concorde pic because although the pic itself isn’t really special, it’s a bit of a surprise if you’ve never seen the inside of a Concorde (you’d think spending $5K on a plane ticket would get you a little roomier accomodations).
Regarding the “too busy” comment, I think you’re right and the size limitation figures prominently into that. There’ve been many times when I think I’ve found the perfect pic only to see that it looks like crap when resized small.

ParticipantI’m suffering from a bad case of “don’t-know-what-the-freakin-voters-want” this week and could use some feedback in narrowing down my choices. If anyone feels so inclined and has the time, my potentials are posted here: Potential Have A Seat Entries. TIA…

ParticipantSo the consensus seems to be no mammals (dolphins, whales), right?

ParticipantI have a lot of what I consider to be good pics for this contest, though. Anyone care to help me decide which ones to use? I’m having a rough time of it.
I’m with you on that, rav. Honestly, when I first saw this contest coming up, I thought I might have to sit it out, but now I find I have a dozen pics that I really like and just can’t decide on.
As for your question, I like these in this order:
bench3websml.jpg
tony1websml.jpg
restaurant3websml.jpgI also like canopywebsml.jpg except that the benches blend into the shrubbery too much (it actually took me a few seconds to see them). If you could perhaps brighten the darks to make the benches stand out a little I could see replacing the third entry with this one.

ParticipantIf anyone’s interested in more of an event setting, there’s also the annual Okie-Tex Star Party hosted by the OKC astronomy club. They go to a ranch just inside the OK border in the Black Mesa area of the panhandle:
It’s at 4439 ft altitude (highest pt in OK) and their website claims that it offers “some of the darkest skies anywhere in the Southwest.” It’s usually held in Oct every year (10/2 – 10/10 this year).

ParticipantYou’re only about 6 hours from me, maybe next summer we can get a weekend shoot together if I manage to get all my gear scared up. I’ve got some mag6 skies less than an hour from the house here.
Heck, with the folks in Phoenix maybe getting interested we could all converge in Albuquerque and set up in the mountains out towards Taos somewhere. There is some seriously pristine sky out that way.
That would be awesome! And thanks again for the info.
I don’t have a scope. I have some decent glass, but it may be not enough for this? F/2.8 70-200mm, plus 1.3x tele-extender.

ParticipantHey, just out of curiosity, where are you going out of town to view stars? I grew up in Tulsa from 1968-97, with the exception of a few years down in Norman at school.
Don’t remember where I saw it (maybe your FB?), but I knew that you’re from these parts. My wife graduated from Memorial in ’82. I’m a Bixby graduate myself from ’80. I lived here from ’68-’86 and just moved back again in ’02.
I’ll have to check out the places you mention. You know, in all my years of living in Tulsa, I’ve never made it to Turkey mountain. They’ve actually got mountain bike and hiking trails there now, although after-hours activity is most likely still illegal.
The place I went for the meteors is just outside of Haskell. I like country roads/highways when riding my cycle (less idiots to deal with and better scenery) and I’d driven this section many times in the day and just thought it would be ideal for star watching since it’s so flat and relatively far away from the city lights. Turns out it was a pretty good place; I’ll definitely be going back there for future astral events, although they’ll have to be somewhat significant since it’s a bit of a drive.
Anyway, my actual location was within a few yards of here:
What took you to Alaska, if you don’t mind me asking?

ParticipantThanks much for the write-up and software pointers, chupathingie. I’ll give your link a read and check out the software you recommended.
When you say “mount”, are you referring to a star-tracking mount (i.e., one that will automatically move to keep the celestial objects in the same position versus time)? Sorry if that’s a stupid question, but I’m more or less a complete noob when it comes to astrophotography.
